If I was in your predicament, and I didn't want to do the work myself, I'd be finding someone that has boxes and does the work. That way you have a warranty, and if the 2nd hand box they put in is no good, they have to replace it with one that is.

Another route is to find a place that can bench test them to warrant the box, then find a different mechanic to put it in. You're then covered by a warranty for the box from the first place, and a warranty from the installation place.

If I wasn't set up to do stuff at home myself, I'd get Allmaz here to do it. They're a wreckers who are also mechanics, so do the work as well. Everything is guaranteed. You're a bit far from them, but check if there's anyone else over there who does similar.

If you go down the rebuild route, get them to install a close ratio straight cut gear set. Giddy up! :mrgreen:

Like Okibi has said, and a theory I also believe in. Unless your gearbox is completely undriveable/fu**ked up/making weird or strange noises, there is no need to replace it if you're just experiencing 'shifting' problems in one gear.

Eliminate other factors that may contribute towards it, such as clutch slave/master cylinders, oil etc prior to dropping stupid money to fix it. Have you tried Nulon Smooth Shift? Or Lucas Lubricant products?

Alright, I might let Okibi to test drive my car tomorrow during the evet then get back to you guys.

I think if I really need to change the box. I will get it rebuild. Even if I don't buy from MX5plus I will still need to pay freight and pay for install fee. And if the 2nd hand is no good then I will need to swap another one which mean I will need to send the bad one back to them, also here cost me again. So for the best and guarantee result. Get profession rebuild seems more economical and has high rate of guarantee.

get Okibi or someone else to drive the car and at least get a feel for it. Then if its really needs attention the box has to come out. If its out it can be replaced by another used unit or repaired. You have to get a quote but anyone repairing it might have to pull it down to tell- maybe that can be done by taking a look and then giving a quote- a mechanic cannot reliably quote without taking a look inside the box. If the quote is exxy then a used unit might be the easy fix. Bear in mind that all of us running NB etc have used gearboxes and many of them operate properly- a car that gets written off can easily have a good gearbox. It comes down to cost.

Thanks mate, Okibi said may be it is the clutch sleeve, and I am getting my roll cage install next week, mean while I will ask them to check out my gearbox too. After that I will decide 2nd hand gearbox or get it rebuild.

Might Okibi have meant clutch cylinder? fresh fluid and a bleed would be a good place to start all and the better if you could have someone help you do it.

Clutch cylinder seems fine, no leaking, work properly, and the fluid only 6 months old. So the only part could went wrong is the sleeve which I couldn't see right now.
