LSD options for NA6?

Postby speed » Sun Apr 27, 2014 12:36 pm

I'm curious about fitting a LSD.
Do LSD's from other model MX5's fit my car or are the splines etc different?

Thanks,
S

All 1.6 NAs had the same half shafts and tailshaft.

All 1.8 NAs, and all NBs (both 1.6 and 1.8) had a larger diff centre, as well as different tailshafts and half shafts.
The exception was the NB SE which if I recall had stronger half shafts with a different spline count.

You're best to change to a 1.8 diff setup, the large crown and pinion setup means they're stronger, and they have more options for diff centres.

The drive shaft out of an auto 1.8 or NB 1.6 has a different yoke size to the manual one, something to watch out for as it won't fit in the 1.6 gearbox.

So what is the final drive ratio in an open NA6 diff compared to an NA8 diff?
I've read that NA8's can be 4.1 or 4.3

I have a 4.1 Torsen fitted in my NA6

Unless you're racing the change from 4.3 to 4.1 was marginal on the traffic light F1.

when going around the twisty country roads....made sweet bugger all difference. You're still quicker around a series of quick corners with a Torsen than a open 4.3 diff. Difference in RPM is about 200 when you get to the top.

I never had any trouble keeping up with SP's unless it came to overtaking.....that's where they shine. Keep in mind You can kill yourself with 70rwkw just as easy as with 130.

on the other hand there used to be an option with Hyundai. That used the same 4.3 cog Mazda uses. But about 1/3rd of the price. You can always change it.

My mind has gotten all foggy with age....not sure what you are talking about tbro.....if i remember correctly though.....not many peeps could keep up with scooter & slammer on the racetrack. With all that added lightness.
But he had a kaaz internal diff or something didn't he? I do recall he was still running the 1.6 diff. even with my clouded brain. Perhaps with all that weight he took off Scooter, it may have prevented the diff from actually failing. LOL

Have considered my usage and as a result decided not to go LSD.
That said I told a mate at work that if he gave me his turbo, I would turbo the MX.
Guess what was on my desk this morning!!!
Guess I never said when, so hopefully that buys me some time :)

For sure but my plan is to refrain from going turbo. It's just a work mate egging me on.
If I did change my mind then I'd probable just sell my car and buy a NA that's already been turbo'd.. and yes then I'd definitely want a torsen. :)
