Anyone else have these under the driver's seat??

Hey guys, I own an NA8 and as I had sold the seats I found these 2 weird devices under the driver seat. 2 box looking things that aren't attached to the floor but are wired.

I am sure one of them is for an alarm (right hand side in the picture), possibly previously installed as it has "adjust sensitivity" on it. The other one (left hand side in the picture) has "window interface" and a list of connections on it.

Anyone else have them? Just wondering if I should cut it off?

do you have an alarm/immobiliser/central locking kit installed?
if you just cut them off, you risk breaking the circuit and the car may not start/doors may not lock/general electrical chaos may ensue.

if anything, trace them back to under the steering column (or where ever they lead) and cut off at the source, making sure the oem wires are connected back up correctly.

One on the right looks to be a microwave sensor for the alarm.

Left seems to be a window roll up module from the description.

I would not cut off or remove. Not sure on your vehicle but if a seat belt is not attached there are often sensors to light up on dash as a reminder. If you sold the seats then those connectors may have attached to the seat i.e. plug/ socket male/ female.

As Emily says - don't cut any wires until you've traced back to the source.

These wires probably intersect circuits. By just cutting at the boxes you will/could break these circuits.

The original circuits will need to be re-connected.

If you do not have wiring experience, take it to an auto-electrician.

I'll try trace them back to see if they are disconnectable. The reason I want to get rid of it is because it looks like dead weight even though it doesn't weigh much. Even flicks my OCD senses a bit.

My seats didn't have any electrical connections on them when I removed them both. Judging from the back of one of them it was cut off some time ago. Also no seat belt warnings for me too.

The alarm sensitivity box should be alright to remove, but I'm just questioning the window interface one.

I'll give it a go, if not then time to whip out the wallet again :shock:

Just unplug them? The white things joining the wires to the black boxes should be removable plugs.

tracing wires back often is totally useless- these will disappear into a break out loom and the wires are often then invisible- thats why wiring diagrams are available.However most of us do not read wiring diagrams well either- there are rules etc most never get their heads around. The golden rule is a bit like keys- throw them away at your peril. London to a brick the car has been buggered about by previous owners- e.g. oe seats removed?

I have looked at lots of wiring diagrams and have read books on auto electrics and still rate myself as an amateur. Your average wiring diagram is like a map of Tokyo streets and lanes with symbols and colours / tracers that are not always correct ( differing colours for different models and versions) and intersections with components that are also not always even easy to identify. I stick by it- a wire disappearing into another loom tells you probably nothing- only the schematic gives as idea on where it goes and where it goes may not lead to enlightenment. And as for reading multi meters including resistance some can do it and others merely use a test light to know if something is live. Clearly some folks are the full bottle on electrical wiring and trouble shooting and fully aware of the processes but my guess is that most struggle .

The gizmos in the photo are quite obviously not factory fitted and therefore the wiring when traced back will not disappear into any factory looms.

I've found the factory service manual wiring diagrams to be excellent, but it does help if you're reading the correct diagram for your model/region.

If you don't know the basic principles in operating multimeter then quite frankly you shouldn't be touching any of wiring at all - don't blame the diagrams.

I probably fit in here.

So far I've set 2 multimetres on fire, both stupid modern digital ones.

Meanwhile, my 30 year old one with the analogue needle display still goes strong.

Multimeters are fused for protection and safety. If you are setting them on fire you are doing something very wrong.

The analogue ones do seem to be more reliable. That is, until you drop them. :oops:
