Re: Cheap forced induction?
Thats only because there is a MONSTER torque dip there on factory cars due to factory tuning.
Flash tune alone fixes 80% of that.

Re: Cheap forced induction?
Isn't the issue less about power increase, as it is making it worthwhile?
I'm sure somebody can make an electric turbo that gives a 100kw boost from 1rpm to 7000rpm..
But the problem would be the 10kg electric motor driving it, the 100kg of batteries, and the massive alternator to keep it charged.
When they work out how to have a lightweight high torque motor, and lightweight batteries that don't need a massive alternator to charge.... then my ears will prick up.

If its a 20% gain instead of a 100% gain is it worthwhile?

From memory the thread said it was a few kg of weight gain. Seems to replace the stock lead-acid battery with a stack of three small LiPolymer batteries - so the weight gain is offset with a saving (the downside being price). It seems to be set up as a 'push to pass' type thing (a few minutes of running, a few minutes of charging). So it gets away with a smallery battery and charging over time means to need for a massive alternator.
I would be interested to see something like hill-climb times with and without.

So if I was thinking of checking out an SP this would be the place you recommend?
Would love to Sprintex my car, but there is not much info available. Obviously they are not marketing to the mx5 community (silly bastards)

Just pop by my work anytime 9-5.30 I'll take you for a run. Not Thursday morning, thats golf day or Friday arvo, thats early mark day.
They really are good fun, or pop in at Ben's next Tuesday Scooby is getting new brakes and Sway bars. Message me the day before as he lives a fair bit in the garage.
I think you will forget your sprintex aspirations pretty quickly.

Re: Cheap forced induction?
the hybrid electric turbo will be in road cars soon enough.
current spec f1 cars use electrically assisted turbos for reduced/0 lag.
but the 200 dollar glorified computer fan is not going to flow anywhere near enough air.
i think it will probably find its way into the next new engine that someone like mclaren or ferrari make in the coming years.
could even be in the 458 replacement who knows!

Re: Cheap forced induction?
If electric motors get that good/small/lite/efficient/cheap we won't be using them to force air into a combustion engine.... That would be akin to using a petrol engine to help shovel coal into a steam engine!

Re: Cheap forced induction?
yes we will.
as long as there are oil company lobbiests we will continue to use electric power as assistance for road cars.
especially with companies like ferrari who have so much heritage around noise alone.
and those motors of that efficiency already exist, they are just in really expensive race cars.
soon they will be in really expensive road cars, then cheaper ones.
slow progression is industries bread and butter.

If I was in the mood for a good conspiracy theory ....
Maybe the problem is the public, We are comfortable and used to filling up with gas. Our love affair with petroleum is known and we are happy with it (even in the face of rising prices and pollution)
We are happy to charge our phones every night but charging your car every night seems a pain. Somebody tried an electric F1 car, when that becomes the norm all the petrol heads will become spark heads. Dare I say it, electric cars need to be cheaper and also 'sexy' as well, BMW i8 sexy.
If there was a practical way of putting an electric motor in the mx5 I would do it and ƒü¢k the lack of exhaust noise.

Re: Cheap forced induction?
I'd bet at least one person has already invented a major fuel breakthrough and just gets paid like $1M per day by the oil producers to keep quiet about it.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Re: Cheap forced induction?
So Audi has now produced an electric supercharger. In their own inimitable fashion it is very highly engineered.
Makes all the negative comments look stupid.
Still don't expect to find it on Ebay soon.

Re: Cheap forced induction?
Electric cars could always have simulated engine sound. Pimp My Ride did it with a people mover van after all using a Vroom Box to make it sound like a Ford GT or Vanquish lol.
