Hey guys, just wondering where you get your rwcs done, penfolds Mazda hawthorn quoted me $198 just for the cert, and im led to believe it's not often a car passes. Rwc without something being fixed. As a uni student I already can't afford to rego the car, let alone get this certificate, so I'm just looking for the cheapest deal around.

A certficate will cost minimum $150 plus rectification costs if required- are you buying a vehicle and if so is the seller not offering it with RWC?

Go to the vicroads site and download the RWC list, it basically lists everything a RWC tester looks at.

Then go over your car as best you can and note down what you think it needs done based off that, and if possible fix any issues you find.

Then take it to a RWC tester and have them do the certificate, they'll still pick up things you've missed, but at least by having done some of the simpler stuff beforehand you save having them give you a list 3 feet long of items to fix.

The mains ones that usually get knocked back are Windscreens (with a RWC it's often a good idea to budget on needing a windscreen replaced) oil leaks, and rust.

As for pricing, as Morlock said, $150 is about the cheapest you'll find. There's a lot of paperwork and licencing costs for places to do RWCs these days, so the cost gets passed on somewhat.

Bout $150 is the going rate. It costs a bit as yes, there is a lot of licensing costs, equipment costs and there is labour in inspecting vehicles. I looked into reinstating our licence a while back, as they stopped doing them in the 90s. We get the joint next to my work to do them. But, it is a pain in the arose and was going to work out too pricey for set up.

I'll definitely download that list, now you have me scared that the chip in my windscreen is going to throw my costs out.

Windscreen is $190 fitted at National Windscreens, a lot if you are struggling but no where near as expensive as a few years ago.Good luck with your car.

you can get the chip checked before you submit it for rwc- i.e. go to the bloke you "select"- they will tell you - some even take a look at the car first for pointers. Bear in mind a chip is only a problem in theory if its in the line of vision. They can also repair some chips quite cheaply i.e. under $50 and the rwc guys usually know and often have their preferred repairer.

Better still get the whole windscreen checked as if it hasn't been replaced it will also have tiny pit marks which many RWC testers in Vic will fail. The pitting is from a number of years of driving in certain environments where the windscreen suffers mild sand blasting.
