A bit of rubber hose over the extension should fatten it out enough for the gater to stay up, stick a washer on top of the hose it if needs to be wider.

Done that. Works great. Top of hose exact fit to bottom of gear knob. Internal diameter of hose just a bit too large so taped the extension so make it bigger.

The extension also seems to have stopped nearly all of the transmission of heat up the gear lever to the gear knob. Now need to find a way to stop all that unwanted heat coming out of the transmission tunnel and the heater.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Have a look at this
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Miatamecca-Insulation-Heat-Shield-Floor-Tunnel-Cure-For-Miata-MX-5-Hot-Foot-/390436403927?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5ae7d2bad7

I fitted this to my NB and has definatley reduced the heat from the tunnel. Not too bad to fit but watch the video first for fitting tips. Also don't let it sit too far forward or the tunnel opens up too much to get it to stick. I did this but despite that it is still sitting perfectly in place after 1 track day.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Yes similar.

The Miatamecca ebay guys refunded me $5US as it was an international order. So cost all up was $60.
And there stuff really sticks.
