I'm interested.

I am also disappointed.

Only three cars each round/class can score points? What is the point of running 4th?

This points system seems to be counterproductive to the intent (or my interpretation) of the series? There is no reward to consistency outside the podium places, which is a slap in the face for the 'also rans', a pretty obvious suggestion to them that this is not a series for them.

I understand the need to balance points across classes, but why not make it say 20 points for 1st and so on for EVERY finisher in the class. If there is only one in the class, good luck to them.

Cue a rethink - please?

Thanks for the comments greenmachine, appreciated.

This is a development series, in several ways. We are endeavoring to put on a series which encourages developing racers to compete.

And we are trying to develop a series which will best suit the MX-5 racing community. We have come up with a structure which we think achieves this, for a number of reasons.

But, if we can make it better, we will. Hence why we want constructive input.

The points structure is an issue we spent much time on, and it is a balance between our observation of the class results in recent years of MX-5 racing – bearing in mind we will have 5 classes this year - and ensuring everybody is involved and included in the ongoing points tally.

We are currently reviewing this issue, bear with us please.

Craig.

With regards to the points why not make the points according to the number of participants in the class. In other words, if 10 racers show up then make it 10 points plus 1. If 5 show up then 5 plus 1 etc. The extra point goes to the winner of the class. Second place gets 9 points as per the example above. Third gets 8 etc. Everyone get a point and doesn't feel like "what the point of racing and getting nothing for it" excuse the pun.
This should work well with different number of racers in the different classes. If your class is consistently undersubscribed then you don't deserve the same number of points for winning your class as say someone who has to race against say 20 racers. This way everyone is making sure everyone comes to the races so they get fully subscribed fields to race against and not leave it up to the organisers to try any encourage people to show up.

As Chris posted above, interest has been great so far. We expected entries for the first round to be down a bit with some preserving their cars for the '300. But we have got a good number signed up. And most of these have signed up for the series, so it is great to see the support for MX-5 racing. This includes an entry for the round from a Victorian competitor.

To reiterate, there will be trophies awarded for the 5 class winners on the day, with the generous support of Wakefield Park. All finishers will accumulate points for their class. And these points will carry forward for their total for the season, towards the Cup championship.

We will have prizes from Audio Technica on the day, some great headphones up for grabs. These will be awarded in the form of encouragement prizes, best presented, worst race suit....stay tuned for details. :D

All MX-5 owners are invited to come along make a day of it and enjoy the spectacle of MX-5s racing at Wakefield Park. Feel free to come and chat with competitors. We look forward to seeing you there. When the draft schedule has been confirmed we will post the race times for anyone wishing to come along.

Craig.

Morning all

A point of clarification, as we approach round 1 of the 2014 MX-5 Cup:

Every race counts for points. So for round one we have 4 races, all count for points for the tally for Class Winners on the day, and for the points tally for the season's Cup champion and runners up.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Craig.

As you are probably aware, CAMS have mandated the use of an approved Frontal Head Restraint (FHR), such as a HANS device, from July 2014 for circuit racing. For more information go to http://nsw.mx5.com.au/news/cams-announcement-on-frontal-head-restraints

Not quite right. From July they mandatory for all National events and from 1 January 2015 all state events for road, off road and circuit events.

Even so, well worth getting one even before they are mandatory.

Good pickup thanks Matt.

And .... at the risk of sounding like a reformed smoker preaching non-smoking.....anybody using a harness should be using one of these. Forego the new tyres, itb's, whatever-go-faster-bit - look after your neck.

Great video here with information on how to be safe, and checklists for your existing safety gear.

One point that struck me, an impact at 42mph is sufficient for basal neck injuries. That is not fast.

Just over 3 weeks to go to Round 2 of the 2014 MX-5 Cup!

There have been a number of cars bought since the last round by new entrants, we look forward to seeing them on the grid over the series.

Anybody needing any of the regs or entry forms for the Cup or Wakefield Park can find them on the club site HERE

As always, thanks to our sponsors and supporters: Audio-Technica, Deckspeed. On offer at the next round will be more prizes of some great headphones from Audio-Technica.

Anyone needing gear to kit themselves or prep their car can contact Revolution Racegear Auburn and Canberra, Carbotech, and ACDC Canberra (Discounts offered to Cup entrants).

Afternoon all. A point of clarification:

The MX-5 Cup is a development series. The Code of Conduct was developed to foster a friendly and sportsmanlike approach.

We encourage all budding MX-5 racers to come and join us. Reasonable track experience and car control is required.

The upper class threshold of a 1min 16s lap at Wakefield Park is a guideline. If you are concerned you may not meet this, please contact us to discuss your eligibility. Provided you have obtained adequate experience, we will provide the support to enable you to take the grid for the first time.

The best way to get quicker is to go racing!

6 days to go until Round 2 of the MX-5 Cup.

The corrected points tally (my error  ) has been loaded to the club site, here: http://nsw.mx5.com.au/motorsport/mx-5-cup/results

Coming into Round 2 the top 3 spots of the Cup leader board are taken by Steve Green, Russell Harris, and Daniel Deckers.

Looking forward to another fun weekend!
Cheers
Craig.
