Most punch from the 1.6?

Postby ciz_ » Wed Mar 19, 2014 1:46 pm

Hey everyone,

Just wondering what are some mods I can do to get some more aggression out of the 1.6 engine (90 Eunos Roadster).
I understand forced induction, turbo, supercharger are all great ways to transform the power output, but I'm more so looking to improve the 1.6's current output without any of that.

Keep in mind that it is an Automatic transmission and I am somewhat of a noob (manual and automatic extractors are the same, right? Been looking at purchasing some).

Thanks everyone :NA6:

This is going to sound cruel but I wouldn't bother. The best transformation would be to put in a manual. Otherwise there is really just breathing mods (intake, exhaust) but to get decent gains is going to cost a fortune. Tried and true mods are timing bump followed by intake, exhaust, extractors but don't expect much difference especially with an auto. Sorry.

No, Add boost. There is so little value for money adding headers and intake etc if you dont do an ecu and cams.

As per the above posts.

Starting with an Auto and wanting power is an uphill battle.
Apart from the gearbox itself sucking power (doughy due to torque converters etc)
the engine in the NA autos produces less power to start with.

I seem to recall them having a lower compression ratio, and the cams having less lift, as well as an ECU tune more suited to being more relaxed. (I can only assume Mazda thought buyers of the auto wanted a smoother comfier car)

I think the power was either 10hp or 10kw below the manual.

It's been ages since I read the info so I may have remembered parts wrong, I think it was on Solomiata or something like that.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

Not really looking to go through the hassle of selling the car and buying a manual. This car is in almost-immaculate condition and it took forever to find one in this condition.
Not to mention it will primarily be a weekender for the rest of its life when it gets 25 years old next year and on club permit rego (hopefully).

Boost the Auto?

Has that been done?
Edit: Someone supercharged the Auto with no problems (on another forum) if I recall correctly!

You can convert to manual and with the amount of manual mx5's around it shouldn't cost too much. Not sure of the limits on an auto.

wasn't the compression in the autos different as well?

Compression and cams IIRC.

It lost either 10kw or 10hp in the process (I remember it was about 10, but can't remember the measurement)

Read my build thread on how to improve a NA6 Auto without going forced. If you want max HP from a 1.6 read Charlie91's build thread and see what is possible.

Swapping to a manual box without swapping the ECU only gives you a manual with an automatic brain. It is suprising the difference between an auto to manual NA6 and a stock manual NA6, especially on the track. The auto/manual convert is down on power. It is a shame that we forgot to dyno my NA6 before the engine change as this would have given some solid proof of leaving the auto ECU in and dropping a manual in.

What is your end goal for the car? Going natural aspirated on a 1.6 is a receipe for debt with no possible return.

Seeing that it will be a weekender and not a track warrior leave it as it is and just enjoy your cruising in the country side

Dundy2456 wrote:Can anyone help a noob here - how would one search for a build thread? Particularly Charlie91s mentioned two comments up?

Click on "Search" which is somewhere near the top of the page (depends on which board style you're using).
Type "Charlie_91" in the "author" field.
Click on "MX5 Garage Chat" next to "Search in forums"
Click "Search"
In the list of pages, scroll down to "charlie's na6" and click on that.
This will open the build thread for charlie_91's NA6.

If I had the money he was asking I would have bought it but money doesn't grow on trees.
It was an awesome car.
