Road Rage from a Lancer

Dash cams are a very worthwhile investment. I have a Itronics ITB-100HD in the Focus and it has come in handy a few times. I actually scored a few free ($350) services after a Ford employee was caught mistreating our car during a small warranty repair. The employee was fired and with the free services it has paid for itself and some. It's good to know you have evidence of everything while you're parked/driving.

There is heaps of camera info and comparisons over at DashcamTalk.

I had this happen a while back, could have been a whole lot worse and if it was he couldn't argue that he wasn't at fault.

I'll post this one up for a laugh. lol

Neither did Marty, but he had a time machine...and future knowledge..

(you got to admit it looked similar... except racing on the right side of the road, with two hatchbacks, moderate traffic..and no poncho... <-I'm guessing)

With stiletto_rebel's incident, well that would have been avoided by not following a car that is inconsistent with speed. I usually give the driver 2 chances to maintain speed - as I could only guess what else they're doing whilst driving that could cause them to back off the accelerator and on again like a late stage Alzheimer sufferer.

After the second chance **BAM** I overtake.

... but .. the camera doesn't show who was behind green_comment, if there was a semi trailer and he'd hit the brakes harder he could have caused an even bigger accident.

The most important safe driving message is - be predictable.

I can't stand when people pull up to turn onto a major road, from a side street, and then sort of nudge forward, almost in an attempt to scare you into believing they're just going to pull out.
This happened the other day to me. A 4wd in a side street started to go, so I slowed a little to avoid an accident (even though I obviously had right of way) upon seeing that I slowed a little, he just floored it. I had to slam the brakes, and still nearly hit him, he then proceeded to drive away 15km over the limit.

Another classic happened to me this morning. Taking off at the lights and an Audi decides that he wants to change lanes, and tries to force his way between me and the car in front of me. I would have had to quite literally stop my car and let the traffic move forward for several seconds before there was enough room for him to get in. This all happened because he thought it was a good idea to get in the far left lane (which merges thanks to parked cars) and then thought "I can get past these cars in the left lane, and then push in further up".

I've also noticed that when an entry ramp onto a freeway has plenty of traffic, no matter how much room I give them to slot in in front of me, it's not good enough. Despite having 10 car lengths between me and the car ahead of me, 9/10 times they'll gas it to get past that 10 car gap and try and get in front of that car ahead, and squeeze into the 2-3 car gap between the two cars ahead of me.

People on Australias roads seem to have a sense of self entitlement and self importance which is greater than their sense of "If I just deal with being one single car back in this line I can avoid the risk of road rage and an accident".

Either way my message is still the same, get a dash camera! They range anywhere from $30 - $400 so there's one for every budget and they are very handy to have. You can hard wire them into the car so you basically never have to touch them, except for when you want to check the SD card contents. They're also fun to install and play around with, if you're into that kinda thing.

If you're looking for the Police to do anything, they won't. Putting my cyclist hat on for a moment, we've had a number of video submissions showing illegal and dangerous/intimidatory acts by drivers given to the Police for zero result, and from what I've heard the NSW Police are even worse - this is why people are going to the media with this stuff, out of sheer frustration. They won't even chat to people - guess they need a crash or someone under a car before they'll do anything.

Do hold on to it, though, and keep it on YouTube. Never know when it'll come in handy.
