Hello fellow SA residents.
With regards to the ECU side of things, gslender is the master, however if you want to have a looksy at something local, I've got a kit built MS2 on a v3.57 board in my NA6 that's currently on a NA motor running e85. There's a turbo sitting in the shed waiting to go on the car, and I'm in the process of working out a steam pipe log job.
I would say that if you've got a steady hand and a modicum of patience, it's not too hard to go down this path. It's got more features than you can ping a piston at (much better than the Link / piggyback / rising rate fuel type stuff), and by the time I got it installed with a MTX-L wideband, it was about a third of the price of a 2nd hand Haltech type option.

Re: Final Turbo R&D + Leap of Faith?
My unknown history NA6 just came back from a local tuner with 186rwhp @ 9psi. After destroying a T4 which came with the second hand kit, I bought a new GT-28 (with the housings to match the manifold and dump pipe from the T4 off an RB20/25), but with ball bearings etc. I do have an intercooler and a G-Reddy BOV.
I now have an awesome car. Can't wait to get on a track.
Will be taking it to Nitro Dan after the holidays.
Car will be doing sprints from Hidden Valley to Victoria in 2014.......Did I mention that I retired today and I'm 63 years old?

Congrats on your retirement! More time to spend playing with cars.
Most of the guys in the SA chapter of the MX5 club are 50 - 60 age bracket, with some in their 70s. Most are old school racers from the 70s, and lots have come from the MG / Triumph crowd. Needless to say that as a spring chicken late 20s guy, I am more than impressed with their skill at the local hillclimbs and track days.
Hows the local scene where you are?

Hi Rhys, mine should be back on the road in the next few weeks and you're welcome to come for a ride to understand the difference in power. Just PM me.
I think I'm up to my 4th or so round of upgrades and I can share my many learnings. We've also modified my father-in law's MX5 as he was so impressed by the transformation. His was std internals running 14psi, still going as strong today.
Cheers,
Ben

My natural aspirated build just made 185 RWHP and I'm happy, however 13 years younger and still working. Now I'm sad

Re: Final Turbo R&D + Leap of Faith?
Sorry guys! Work had me over christmas, and then uni, so ive only just been able to be able to come onto the forums again!
Thanks Bark! That would be awesome i would love for you to take me for a drive
Now,
Wow how are you managing that? that seems crazy for an n/a na6!!
So, if anyone gets a chance to read this from the depth of the forums, I have had the option for a free vf26 or vf27 (twin turbo from subaru) now the vf26 comes with a flange and piping (flange is what is useful for me, so I dont have to make one!)
Does anyone have any info on possibly using these? compared to the gt28/25 or the tiny t02? Im only considering it as I will be able to pick them up for nothing, and nothing beats that!!!
I think ill go PnP, seems pretty easy and keeping this as budget as possible (hopefully a trip to Dann with my new hardware!!)

In the Subaru the 26 is the primary turbo and the 27 is the secondary, so the 26 spools slightly quicker, but the 27 will make (or have the potential to make) more total power at the same boost levels, as well as a higher peak power (again potentially). You should be able to push 250hp pretty easy with the 27 as long as everything else is up to the job, the turbo itself could make more than that if you really wanted to push it, but 250hp is a safe and super fun number in an MX5...
Hard to compare to a T25 cause there are a million different variants out there, but compared to the common Nissan fitted ones, I'd take the vf27 over an old bush bearing t25, but I'd take the ballbearing late model t28 over the vf27... All are good options for an MX5.
Benefit of your Subaru ones is they're free, benefit of the t25/28 is the common flange gives you lots of easy replacement and upgrade options on the same flanges if you ever go down that track.
There's heaps of solid info on the vf flow rates all over Subaru forums, the garret flow maps are often hard to trust, again just because unless you have it in your hands it's often hard to tell exactly what someone means by t25....
When results speak for themselves - don't interrupt.

Thankyou for the great response, was finding it hard to get solid information on the T25/28, but they seem like similar(ish) turbos, and I have a couple of flanges for it I just need to weld it up

Hoping to get some free flanges thrown in too, but finding parts will be more expensive like you said, im hoping to keep it as budget as possible!
I have found this yes, but they seem to have similar flow rate, (390 for t25 vs 410 vf27 and 395 for vf26)Sean wrote: There's heaps of solid info on the vf flow rates all over Subaru forums, the garret flow maps are often hard to trust, again just because unless you have it in your hands it's often hard to tell exactly what someone means by t25....
Although i did hear that the vf27's and 26's were BB turbos also, so maybe would be a good option, although not as large as a T28 (as far as I can find!)
