RPF1 brake clearance on nb8b?

Postby sunlightsilver » Thu Mar 13, 2014 3:18 pm

Hi guys,

I've found a set of rpf1's for sale second hand. They are 15x7 +35 with 195/50 tyres, but during my research I came across some threads via google about there being possible brake clearance issues with the bigger brake nb's with this particular size/offset.

Does anyone know this for certain? Or should I just wait for a different set, possibly 15x8? It's a bit of a drive for me to go view these wheels to go fit them and see first hand, would like to know for sure to save myself the cost of fuel and time..

Thanks in advance, I'm sure you get sick of these questions.

The main clearance issues that crop up are diameter, and spoke clearance.

Diameter is easy to measure, spoke clearance is a bit harder, especially since it can change a bit on MX5s, and it differs on every wheel.

Unfortunately there's not an easy way to test it without a trial fit.

Your best bet (without going over there) is to get 2 good straight rulers.
Lay one flat on the wheel hub, then measure how far above it the caliper sits (above meaning towards the outer edge of the car)

Get the wheel seller to do the same (but measuring from the mounting face to the inside of the spokes)

It will give you an idea of how close it is, but still won't be 100% (since the back of spokes are often curved, and there's no guarantee of correct measurement on the sellers behalf)

If they do clip the calipers, usually a small wheel spacer will correct it, but it's up to you to do the research and decide if you're willing to use spacers.

edit:
when you measure the caliper clearance, remember to add some leeway, MX5s use sliding calipers, so they can stick out further with brand new pads and rotors, and sit further in with worn pads/rotors.

I think it's been pretty well settled that the 15" RPF1s won't fit an NB8B. The 16" do. Not sure that there's a 15x8 option, only ever seen 15x7.

Yeah I just found a thread on here pretty much exactly like this one.. I feel bad now haha.

It's a shame there's no 15x8.. maybe I'll just need to get 6ul's.

Thanks hks_kansei, you always are very informative in your replies. Not really interested in using spacers, I think I will just keep searching.

So.. if anyones got any 6ul's they want to sell, hit me up

those +35s will fit with a 5mm spacer

"Does not fit factory Sport brakes that were standard in 03-05 and optional from 01+ unless you ALSO use a 5mm spacer."
