When I was there last the ticket was about the same price as buying a bullet train ticket Tokyo to Kyoto return once you get to Japan, you can get just about anywhere in Japan fast and efficiently.
Train is the best way to travel around Japan and at the speed the bullet trains go it's more like flying.
