Only national level this year and state level next year. So a while before it gets to club level. Hopefully the market will open up on them a bit more.

If it ever does get introduced into club level the cost should be a lot less less than current ones as the demand will have increased. However a good alternative to a HANS is a neck collar as it does not require all the additional equipment (anchor points, harness and seat) and costs a fraction of a 'cheap' HANS.

I'm just waiting for the day somebody decides they're onto a winner budget version and just ties a ratchet strap around their helmet and headrest.
Then complains about not passing scrutineering.

It'll probably be the same guy that shows up with his fire extinguisher cable tied to a plastic trim panel and whines about the rules.

Just to note, this mandate by CAMS is from July 2014 for national events, and from 1 Jan 2015 for state events.

This would of course only apply to events run under a CAMS permit.

Also, It is not a HANS device that will be mandatory, but a Frontal Head Restraint (FHR), although HANS devices are the most common FHRs.

When it does get introduced into club level the cost may be a lot less less than current ones as the demand will have increased, and the HANS patents may have expired or been circumvented, bringing more competition to the market.

There, fixed it for you!

That is great news. And only 10 years after it was mandated by NASCAR.

I don't know why the risks are always downplayed in the lesser events - the scariest crash I have seen was at a club day, in a road registered car. You don't need to be going fast to have a serious incident.

Magpie I am not sure about the neck collars, do you have any info on their benefits? I have read they provide muscular relief and support but little benefit in a big bang, but can't put my hands (or mouse) on where I read that.
Craig.

Not an alternative to a HANS style device at all.

HANS STYLE device :D

I think HANS will become a household name like Hoover, Band Aid, Frisbee etc.

I have been using a HANS brand device for a while, not much point in waiting to buy one in my opinion. Motorsport is not suddenly more dangerous after the compliance date or any less dangerous run under an alternate permit to a CAMS one. They are a one time purchase and a fraction of the price of some of the parts people buy for their car.

It's worth highlighting that these requirements only apply to the event disciplines of "circuit races, road events and off road events". They do not (yet) apply to speed events (hillclimb, sprint/lap dash, supersprint, autocross, rallycross) or autotest events (motorkhana, khanacross, observed section trials).

I'm another strong advocate of Frontal Head Restraints at speed events, especially if you wear a harness. However, I think the situation needs to be managed very carefully in order to balance risk against barriers to participation.

Good article on the eye popping physics of impacts, and benefits of the HANS device (and Leatt collar).

http://circuitprodigital.com/2010/08/22/hans-devices%E2%80%93brace-yourselves/

And for anyone that hasn't yet seen a video demo:

They cost money, sure. About the same as a semi decent motorsport helmet. Which is peanuts compared to the other ways we spend money on our cars.

A helmet adds mass to your head which the neck can't support in a rapid deceleration. Basically anybody using a harness should wear a HANS type device - seat belts allow more torso movement so the 'whip' effect isn't so significant (although there are other obvious negatives of seatbelts vs harness).

Stupid question, but running a FHR with only a seatbelt with pretensioner, is this a bad idea?

You really need belts on both shoulders for it to work. Without belts on both sides, all the inertia is going through one side only, twisting your body. You'd probably be better off with a neck collar instead.
