Putting a price on it

Postby Miniack » Thu Mar 06, 2014 4:20 pm

G'day guys, newbie and hopefully soon to be regular here.

I had no idea where to post this, I have a question about a stat write off na8 I'm looking at buying.

Essentially, it's a 95k 1.8 that's been written off and then repaired and it can't be registered (no idea why they would try to repair it?) The photos look good, it's clean. It's from a dealer who was going to part it out but has decided to sell it instead.

I'm keen to buy it, but there's an issue of how much it's worth. He's approaching from the aspect of 'it's an na8, rare and in good condition, they go for $8/9k once restored' whereas I'm approaching it from 'unrego'd car which will be used for parts'.

How much should I offer?

I'll pay you all back with an entertaining build-threads.com style shell swap if you help me :D

Edit: it's completely bone stock. It's got no roof either, but has a hard top which I cant be bothered bartering for.

U say it can't be registered. Thus I would put a value of zero on it.

The dealers dreaming, parts value would be $2K max maybe $3k with the hardtop. Registered NA8 clubmans come up for $6000.

Just look at a few posts on the forum in last couple of weeks. That should give you an idea on how much you should be spending on a written off MX5. Its only good for parts as you cannot re register it again.

Do you know how it is written off? Collision? Flood?

If it is collision and written off, I cannot comprehend why they would even repair it.. :?:

Great thanks guys, I'd started questioning myself about how much a low kays 1.8 is really worth.

It's a front impact repair. New radiator etc, mechanically its fine, just the chassis itself is obviously unsafe. He's got a bare chassis to go with it too, but that's only worth a couple hundred.

Perusing the fs threads has helped a lot too.

Cheers!

Dont do it, too many decent ones around for a good price to bother mate. Unless you like headaches, then go for it!

Once repaired, repairable write offs are worth about 50% of non-write off value. A statutory write off is worth whatever it can bring in parts:

Before you think any further about this, research the hoops that you will have to jump through to get anywhere near registration. Nothing in this field is cheap.

and if considering buying it for parts and selling them off, take into account what you think you might get for the parts, and then deduct the massive amount of time and hassle you'll go to in order to find buyers - some of whom will want exact parts numbers, freight quotations, price negotiations, trips to Auspost, disputes over non-working parts after arrival etc etc. And then you'll probably still have to pay to dispose of the unsellable bits.
