Speedo Acting Up

Postby Dundy2456 » Wed Feb 26, 2014 7:47 pm

Hey everyone,

I've owned an '89 mx5 for about a year. 6 months into it I removed the gauge cluster to clean it up a bit. I detached the three main connections at the rear of the cluster and replaced them just the same when I was done. Since then my Speedo does a number of things:

It idles at 0 rpm, it shows an rpm about 5k higher than expected (eg instead of 80 kph at 2500 it sits at 3000) and it jumps up and down, but only once throughout the drive.

It does any of the above on any given day. It also chooses to work fine most of the time.

Any thoughts on what I can look at?

Cheers

Mine does the same from time to time. Like with your experience, it happened all of a sudden.

From what I have read, cleaning the ground points in the engine bay and cleaning/replacing the ignitor (as it controls the tach signal to the coil) usually help. In my case they haven't.

I have yet to pull the cluster out to check behind.

I am also interested in other people's experiences as the two commonly suggested methods I listed above have not resulted in any positive results to date for myself (but may work for you, so it's still worth looking into).

Cheers RevHead, I'll give that a go once the rain clears up!
