Seat side mounts: What are my options?

Postby PaulF » Sun Feb 16, 2014 2:21 pm

Hey guys,

I recently bought a Cobra Monaco Sport as a new passenger seat and got some plates with it that allowed it to bolt on to the standard rails. I'd also like to be able to use it on the driver's side. The plates work (after some fiddling, and buying all of the fasteners because none were included) but I'm not particularly happy with the seating position so I'm looking at my options for side mounts. So far I've come across two MX5-specific options:

ProCar Innovations (PCI): Version 1 has easy adjustment forward and back, but is USD$200 + shipping. Version 2 requires a fair bit of hammering to make it fit, and is still USD$150 + shipping.

JB Fabrication: The shipping on these is killer for only one set, though if I got a few people together for a group buy they'd be much cheaper. For one set shipped I'm looking at around AUD$200, or for two sets about $280 shipped. The big advantage of these for me is that the one set works on both sides of the car, unlike the PCI ones which are side-specific.

There are lots of "universal" options, but I'm not convinced that they're worth anything to me unless I know they'll work on an MX5.

Any feedback on this would be appreciated. If there are any options that I've missed, you have a used pair of side mounts to sell me, or you'd be interested in a group buy then let me know.

I am not sure how the Cobra seat compares to the Sparco Sprint V but you can with a bit of work get the Sprint V to bolt straight to the stock rails.

When I was looking at the Cobra seat I was reminded of NitroDan's home made side mounts.

The Cobra is on stock rails at the moment, but I'm not happy with the positioning (it's too upright). I'm also not really keen on welding something to the standard rails because:
A - I only have one set of rails
B - I want to be able to go back to stock seats if necessary and
C - I'd like the seats to sit pretty low in the car.

I can get Dann to build something but I thought I'd check out all my off-the-shelf options first.

I've got PCI sidemounts bolted to my stock rails. No modification to either.

Probably doesn't help with your original question though.
