What to do with old gearbox

Having replaced the 5 speed gearbox in my NA6 with low km 5 speed I now have the old 'box hanging around. It has done 190,000km and has a bearing going. My inclination is to try to replace the bearing(s) mostly as a learning exercise for me. I have not been able to find an estimate of the cost of the bearings (I have not rung Mazda as I was not going to use genuine). Possibly this is another stupid idea of mine, as the replacement box with 50K kms was only $230 (plus seals).

Any thoughts?

If you want to have a shot at rebuilding it go for it.

As for the bearing, rather than Mazda, you'd be better off removing the bearing and taking it in to a bearing place (CBC bearings or someone like them) and getting a new one to use.

my GF builds gearboxes and she says they aren't that difficult if you take your time. Go slow, don't force anything, LABEL EVERYTHING.

They're great fun. Go for it. I'm just sad HKS won't let me redo my three speed whilst the engine is out. Do one thing at a time he said. *sniffs* :mrgreen:

You will definitely need to replace gaskets and seals if you open it up. I would recommend doing all bearings and check synchros

Find someone who will build you a straight cut gearset and go nuts :twisted:

I have nothing to loose (and no-one I hate that much), so I will have a go. I was going to take the bearings to CBC to get a match - I read that suggestion on the web somewhere else. I took the low km one I put in the car apart after I bought it as I didn't believe the claim about it's kms. Getting the box apart to the point where I had the guts - to be technical - out in a unit was not that hard. I bought the special gasket stuff for re-assembly and it would be a shame to waste it. It wil be good practice for the gearbox from my Datsun 2000 Sports which has been standing around for 30 years
