NA rear caliper rebuild - Adjuster screw removal

Postby Rovy » Sun Feb 09, 2014 7:17 pm

Hi,

Been rebuilding the rear left brake caliper on my NA. The hand brake lever will just not move at all, and I keep stripping the teeth on the hex-key bolt.

Got a rebuild kit and started stripping down the caliper. I got the Circlip off but I can't get the adjuster screw out.

Does anyone know how to pull a stubborn adjuster screw out without scratching the calipers cylinder?

What is the tread size on the adjuster screw?
Thanks,
Glen

Is this what you are after? if so it is a 4mm allen key and it should just fall out.

That is the Rear Caliper Outer Adjuster with the 4mm hex that turns the internal adjuster screw. I have stripped the teeth on that a couple of times, but don't need another one yet. The brake lever doesn't move at all and I guess it has to be rusted up inside. So I took the caliper off to rebuild it

I have the piston out of the caliper and removed the internal c-ring. The adjuster screw should just come out with a little persuasion, but no it is jammed in there. I need something to pull the sucker out.

I have a set of rear calipers off an NA6 if you are near the Gold Coast.

I have this issue on my NA8. In my case I ended up getting a new replacement from another forum member for the same price I would have paid at a wrecker (around $170).

Try soaking it in PB Blaster http://www.blastergroup.com.au/ or similar product.

If that doesn't work then take up Magpie's offer....or go to a wrecker.

Good luck.

Tried WD40 and got out alot of crap from the hex outer adjuster hole. Nothing moved.
I was determined to rebuild it, but might save myself some grey hairs and get a replacement caliper.
I need the car on the road so I have had to put it back on. I will try soaking it PB next weekend.

Cheers
