I've read that you can do it with non VVT loom and ecu and an aftermarket VVT controller. Is this wrong?

Followed a long line of oil left by a car entering the Eastern Freeway. Council workers had put sand on it. It looked like the sump plug has fallen out as it was a long neat line.

i blew the inside of my oil pressure switch once. high rpm for long duration, and all the oil blew out that little 3mm hole. bearings welded themselves together.

It can be done, but if that is the way you are going you may as well go full standalone :)
