NA6 interior lights faulty?

Postby lovelyqoo » Wed Jan 22, 2014 2:19 pm

Quite recently the interior dome lights of my NA6 has started working...abit strangely.

On off mode both lights are off. On door mode both lights are on, WITH AND WITHOUT the door being closed. On On position, they are OFF.

Needless to say it is abit annoying when I try and get into my car at night.

I did put new water into the water squirter bottle in the engine bay the afternoon before it stopped working, would I have shorted any wire?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

with them in the "door" position open a door and find the little black plastic nipple in the door frame. That's the switch that lets them know the door is open/closed.
Press the switch in and out to see if the lights go on and off. They should go off when the nipple is pressed in. (only have one door open at a time)

it's possible those switches are faulty and stuck on, leaving the lights on all the time. The contacts for those switches often get rusty.

It wouldn't explain them being off when the switch is set to always on though?

Mazda really didn't think the itnerior lights through on NA or NB.

NA has fine light output, as long as you wanted to look at your feet.

NB had a light in the windscreen header with great positioning...... that they decided to tint the lens dark so it's really dim.

Unable to add any advice on the original question not already given by earlier posters.

With regards to the light output and direction.

Get yourself down to your local Jaycar store, and pick up two of these ==>> http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ZD0484

After installing the new globes, rotate the light fittings 180 degrees so the light is facing up.

Not as good as an overhead light.....but 1000% better than the oginal setup.

I would post some picture, but I stole the globes out of the MX-5 and installed them in the Outback.

Mine does this sometimes, try placing the switch between the ON and DOOR positions.

Just have a fiddle around with the switch to get the sweet spot for them to turn on or it could be the globe inside not getting enough contact so try those as well.

If that's the case you can likely fix it by bending the globe contacts out a little and giving them a light sand.
Or buy a can of electrical contact cleaner and blast the contacts for the globe, and the switch.

That stuff works wonders.

That guy seems to have modified his in some way for more light, but the position is the same.
There will be a second one on the driver's side in the same position.
