NA6 GRINDING NOISE ON DEACCELERATION

Postby OR31LLY » Fri Feb 07, 2014 10:26 am

Hey all.
Stock Std NA6 with assuming oem clutch.
In 2nd 3rd and 4th gear, on deaccel, while gear is still engaged, i get a grinding noise until push the clutch in.

It is very loud and I can hear it with the softop on and worse off when down...It is only heard from about 4000rpm-1600rpm and get louder as the revs drop.
Could it be somiething as simple as a heat sheild vibrating?
In neutral and revving the car it is slightly heard, but only at 3000rpm...
Or is it diff related or gearbox?

Cheers :)

Might be the gearbox but its probably the diff.

If its the diff it doesn't have long. I went through 6x 1.6 diff's before iI got a 1.8.

Well I put it up on jack stands and put it in gear and revved the car, and no noise.
So i then would ride the brake or stab it and the noise would appear again?
I cant tell if its coming from the back or the front.
I dont have much play in the tailshaft either.

So it makes a noise under load. Again, its either the gearbox or the diff, it might be the tailshaft but I highly doubt it.

I'd put money on diff.

If you have roadside assist included in insurance just let it fail. Thats by far the easiest way to find out what it is.

possibly PPF out of alignment, my one is slightly out of alignment and i'm getting that grinding kinda noise

I been meaning to get it up on the hoist and realign it

EDIT... so its happening under acceleration or backing off? if its under acceleration gotta be something else
MY07 NC, Mazdaspeed Body, Ohlins, Full GWR Exhaust, 17x9 RPF1's, 4.1FGR and lots lots more

I didnt think the PPF could be altered that much that is has any effect on the u joint angles for the driveshaft?

And its happening while backing off.

Well... If you have a tow included already, it costs nothing except calling into work and taking the day off.

Mechanics charge between 80 and 120/h to diagnose it, they could be wrong and etc etc.

If you just let it fail, you then come onto the forum and request a gearbox or diff which should cost 200 or less and then take it to a mechanic to spend the 1-3 hours to fit it. So it costs 3-600 and you pay only for the parts and repair without any elevated prices.

Or you could take it to a mechanic and just give him 1000 bucks and hope for the best. its what they are like, it's why I dont work for someone as a mechanic anymore.

Because that sound is the exhaust heat shield.

My car sounded like that. Lasted about 2 years. But it was a low power 1.6, non functioning vlsd, dríven hard at events, but grandpa'd to and from. There was sign that catastrophic failure was about to occur.
Dan's advice is OK, if you can stand the inconvenience. I'd start looking for the 1.8 conversion now. If you never need it you should still be able to sell it easily.
