Ok, just realised the following sounds smart arse-ish, but it's not meant to be. Just throwing things out for you to factor in to your costings.

The cheap option is definitely to whack in a second hand motor. However, gone are the days of ridiculously cheap engines for these. How good are you on the tools? Are you going to be able to do pretty much all the labour yourself? Or are you going to have to pay quite a bit of labour? It's all stuff to factor in.

I'm pretty lucky having a well sorted home workshop, heaps of spares and literally tonnes of racking of hose clamps, nuts, bolts, assorted fasteners (I'm a freak and HKS_Kansei is patient), spare hosing etc. Are you going to have to buy everything from scratch though? Sounds crazy, but it all needs to be factored in. It's the little stuff that eats your money.

I recently priced a second hand NA6 engine and some bits to keep it reliable (belts, timing kit, fluids, etc.) and that came to around $1700. For parts alone. I haven't priced a BP or the like, but I doubt you'll be getting out of it for under 2k for just parts, if you're doing it properly.

Now, to rebuilds: Will you be assembling it yourself? Boring, honing, price of parts etc. is pretty much the same fee no matter how big you go. But, well, you can't go crazy with these motors and expect reliability. I have all parts ready to do the bottom end on a motor in my garage currently to stock specifications including machining. All up, TRADE price, was just under $2k. There's still more to buy. I still have to do the head, that's not included. Just under 2k for a stock old-school bottom end (simple as can be). Depending which way you want to go, are you going to have to factor in an ECU etc.? Do you have all the required tools to assemble it? Do you have the time and patience? Is someone going to be happy for you to plonk stuff in their workshop whilst you do it? Most importantly... are you going to be able to keep everything clean (crucial) and together in someone else's workshop whilst you're not there?

I'm not trying to be a smart arse, just throwing things out there for you to factor in.

If you're doing an engine build yourself, I reckon factor around 2.5 - 3k minimum unless you can get trade pricing. There'll be tools you need to buy, sealants, replacement items, fluids, etc.

What would I do? If I was chasing more power, I'd be pulling the engine out and rebuilding it to whatever specs you want. Assuming it doesn't have a cracked head or block. First though, I'd be chasing why it shat itself.

I have access to a mechanic with 30years experience, all his tools, and I get trade price. What I can't do he jumps in and helps, and I pay a token fee and help out where I can doing hack work and running errands. (My uncle). His son (my cousin, obviously) and myself are very close, so I'm staying at his house anyway every now and then.
This means I'll be able to do everything myself. I think even he outsources a few tasks like machining the face of the head, for example.

I'm now starting to think a VVT stockie with 4-1's and cams + ECU, (MAYBE injectors and ITB's) will do the trick, and I'll keep the blown up engine and build it up over the next year or so, then swap it out when I'm ready.

I know you think you're being a smartarse, but you've actually all been extremely helpful, and I'm very grateful.

Sounds like you're on the right track. And I'm glad I didn't come off as a smartarse!

Definitely rebuild it over time. You'll spend heaps, but you'll have so much fun doing it that the cost won't matter! And at the end, you'll have a kick-arse engine you can be proud of.

Turbo a stock engine.

I think you will be disappointed in a full weight car with a stock engine for that money.

You didn't block the ports on the cam cover did you?

Dann is right, but you as you can't drive a turbo in Vic on Ps, and you say yourself you don't need big power (true), instead look for the best used NB motor you can get, preferably from someone who'll supply, install and warrant it.

Put a new HD clutch in it while it's out because it's just wrong not to.

By the way, how did you end up with no oil (that's properly disturbing)?

No idea. it's leaving drips now so I guess I left it somewhere on the highway? I checked it like 2 or 3 weeks ago and it was fine.
I have a heavy duty excedy clutch in it with like 7000k on it.

I haven't blocked any ports on anything?

Just i know you fitted an intake so wondered what you did with the cam cover venting ports. Ive seen blocked pcv push cam and crank seals right out and just pour oil straight out until it was empty.

Engine plus ecu plus cams plus tuning will more then spend you budget.

Itbs aren't worth the money on a DD due to torque loss at lower revs.

So no need to change the clutch so some $$$s saved there.

Dann's given you at least one way you can quickly go from some oil to none. With all due respect it may be better for the solution to be provided this time by an expert who will stand by his/her work.

Just out of interest, what was the temp gauge telling you during the death throes of the motor?

Well the temp gauge was doing what it always does; that is- sitting just a smudge below halfway.
Coolant was new, oil was new, fully synthetic 10r40 Valvoline 'racing' oil, car was serviced absolutely and meticulously 6000-8000km's ago (literally every filter, hose, radiator, clutch, belt attached to the car)

Only thing out of the ordinary is the car overheated somewhat on one of those 44degC days about 2 weeks ago. Not like 'radiator boiled over what's all this steam where's all my coolant' but the therm gauge went from its usual 45% to about 60%. I just assumed that was normal in nearly 45degC weather though.

I will do a full 'investigation' in a week when I get to ripping the worlds largest paper weight out of the engine bay.
Might as well do a full engine bay detail and wire tuck while she's in pieces eh? What else would you do if your car had no engine?

Maybe Dann will tell you a bearing turned around when it overheated?

My condolences, I know how that feels as it happened to me last Easter. But after 1 week of labour and a used engine I didn't end up too far in the red as I was able to sell the dead motor. Hope you get back on the road soon.

And all of this happened not 20 minutes after a really wash!

Why do bad things happen to clean cars?
I've decided to do some research and stick in a BPZ3 instead of a BP4W and keep the busted 4W and spend a year or two building it, before swapping back to the original, repaired and built engine.

Wreckers the best place to get an engine? I sort of don't really trust them when they say '60,000km' or 'oh yeah it definitely works'

With the engine out you can give the engine bay a really good clean. Maybe even splash some polish around.
I wonder where the oil went? Is your sump plug in? Is all your oil inside your exhaust pipe? I guess there is a massive oil slick on the freeway.

Well apparantly I can get a VVT motor for $2200, but he would take my old motor off me. Roughly 70,000kms
Is that 'in the ballpark'?

Sounds expensive as hell.

I MIGHT pay 800 for one. You still need intake, loom etc
