HD Clutch and Flywheel Recommendations?

Postby roket52 » Tue Feb 04, 2014 6:25 pm

Hi guys,

In the market for a good HD Clutch and a lightened flywheel around the 10-12 lb mark . I would like to buy local if it doesnt work out to be a hell of a lot more expensive. Does anyone have any brand recommendations? I'd like to get the clutch, fly and install done for about a grand.

vehicle is an 01 NB8B

Thanks

There's a cheap OS Giken clutch in the For Sale forum. Charlie_91 had one in his so you know it'll handle whatever you throw at it.

Depends on how much power your running/planning to run but for stock or moderate power levels going to a NA6 HD clutch and lightweight flywheel really transforms the nb8b for the better. I did this and love it, much more happy to rev now and revs easier/quicker.

(sorry I don't know how to use the quote function properly)

Lokiel - I have seen that clutch. Sounds like a high horse power setup and with that it may carry extra weight that I don’t think i need in my stockish power nb. I will have to do a bit more research on that model though cheers.

Speed freak- forgive my ignorance on the 1.6 clutch in the nb but would the advantage of this be weight? And disadvantage be limited horse power rating? If so it's definitely an interesting option.

Tescoking - do exedy make a lightweight fly wheel for the mx5? I had a quick glance earlier at their site but didn't see a listing. Could be me though. What do U recommend organic or ceramic?

Talk to Jason at mx5 plus (automotive plus) up in Aspley (Brisbane). They sell the exedy heavy duty and lightweight flywheel. I got mine fitted for around the $1K mark. They had recommended using the 1.6 clutch and flywheel, as the light flywheel really transforms the ability to rev the 1.8 and with the heavy duty clutch the pedal feel is actually lighter!

You might want to actually challenge the reason why t do it all unless you are going on a racetrack. There are posts on this subject and not everyone would see it as an improvement.

Thanks for the contact chris ill definately give him a call to have a chat!

Murlock this mod will complement what Iam trying to ahcieve with fast, instantanious power delivery. Heck if there isnt much power to start with it would be nice for it to come on quick when needed!
With our race bikes that I used to own and build up we would try to lighten the driveline (chain and sprockets) as much as possible which helped to unlock horsepower and also speed up the power delivery. On a bike it also helped handling too becuase of the gyroscopic efftect. Although slighly different some of those factors will still apply.

I need to replace the clutch anyway so its the best time for me to consider the flywheel option. The exedy one weighs in at 12lbs so not quite the 10lbs which some go to but still a good weight saving off stock. At 12lbs it should still be reaonably streetable

Yea mate, as ChrisEarl mentioned below going to the B6 (1.6l) clutch and flywheel reduces weight/excess mass hugely, plus the nb8b clutch is known to shudder once a little worn so going to the B6 setup eliminates this. Going to the 1.6 clutch on a 1.8 doesnt mean its a weaker clutch, the HD version still has a higher clamping force then the stock setup and if you go through Automotive Plus (I got mine done there and highly recommend them, speak to Jason he'll sort you out ;) ) that B6 HD clutch can be beefed up to handle around 400 hp or so, so its by no means weaker.

Any comment you hear about the 1.6 likes to rev more and happier then the 1.8, if they drove a 1.8 with a 1.6 setup Im sure they would no longer say that. It revs much more freely and is much happier to be revved. Plus the extremely lightweight flywheel is no dramas in traffic or for daily driving. Mine is a DD and I love it, much better then the stock setup. Highly recommend it.
