Up here where I live, where the highways are narrow pot-holed goat tracks, a flat tyre is a very common occurrence.
If I was to contemplate a trip with the Missus - either North, South or West, I would have to think seriously about the spare tyre situation.
There are plenty of mobile phone black spots where you can forget about calling the RACQ.
Even if you could, you would expect a several hour wait for service.
I would not entertain the idea of depending on the space-saver, so a full-size spare is an absolute essential (two would be better)
My conclusion is that if I ever decide to travel any significant distance in the MX5 I will get the local exhaust shop to fabricate a spare wheel carrier to bolt on at the rear and carry a full-size spare just outboard of the boot. This has the advantage that I can use all the boot space for luggage.

I took the spare out of the boot of my NA and replaced it with a can of foam. If I get a flat I'll just call roadside assist, and use the foam if I'm desperate.

Maybe I'd put the spare back in the boot if going a long way out of town, but not being able to get my shopping and gym gear in the boot at the same time is an issue.

In the last 8 years I've never had a flat with my NC.
Even been on road trip from Brisbane to airily beach a few years back.

My backup is
Having mazda roadside assistance
Getting the best tyres possible
Having regular services
Getting the tyres fixed for slow leaks when noticed.
The puncher kit in the boot as last resort

Of course now that I post this I bet a flat will hit me sometime soon .. Lol

Try having an SE with the factory 17" rims.
I got a slow flat after running over a spine on the road when on holidays and learnt very quickly that the space saver works, but the 17" rim will not fit in the boot unless you remove all the trim, completely deflate the tyre and compress it (ie 2 people pushing it as hard as possible) as you juuust squeeze it into the boot space.
Then the passenger has to sit with a suitcase on their lap all the way home lol

Iv since removed the spare (and made a flat false floor) and picked up a compressor/foam kit.
However I'm about to head off to tassie for a driving trip and have out the space saver back in just for this run just in case I'm in the middle of whoop whoop if one goes down.

It'll come out as soon as I get home, because locally I can call a friend to come with a spare if the goop doesn't work

Hi.
I am sure I have seen a full size spare mounted under the car.

A full size wheel does not have to go in the boot - it merely needs to secured and the lid does not have to be closed. Something like a blanket a strap or some bubble wrap might be a thought.
