No worries. What's the benefit of a Hilux rear end?

I don't think Travis has a mx5, just using the engine and gear box for one in another chassis.

So I'd guess the advantage of the hilux diff is people have already worked a conversion out.

Yeah, mx5 gear into a 79 escort.

Hilux rear end for durability. And it will Bolt in to the escort.

With a 3.6-4.1 ratio diff at what speeds will it hit the limiter with a 5sp?

Lists the gear ratios for the 5 and 6 sp boxes fitted to MX5's

The author also claims that Aus delivered 10AE came with a 3.909 diff ratio as opposed to the NB8B which had the same box with the 3.636 diff.
The SE 6sp uses the same ratios but there are claims it included some internal strengthening.

Torsen diff doesn't work the same. No torque applied it behaves like an open diff. So the old son wheel trick doesn't work

I have found this works to identify id a torsen diff is fitted.
Jack up one wheel with a floor jack (with wheels), release the clutch in 1st (car shouldn't move) then apply the handbrake, torsen will crossload and drive whereas the open will do nothing.
If the car moves before applying the handbrake it has another form of LSD (clutch pack or detroit)

Point 1 - Don't try this at home unless supervised by a competent adult (at least one with some brains)
To appease the safety gods I'll break it down!

Jack up one wheel off the ground.
Using a trolley jack (the type with little metal wheels) and lift one of the rear wheels only far enough that the tyre is not in contact with the ground, 10-25mm is sufficient!
Do I need to explain that the trolley jack needs to be aligned with the potential direction of travel (see point 1)

If the car starts to move, engage the clutch so the car stops. Objective has been achieved, you have another form of LSD (clutch pack or detroit).

The objective is to achieve some movement, not drive across the road or down the street unless you are a complete moron (see point 1)
