And welcome to the forum CatchyD, this is typical of what you will have to sift through to find the info your after.

If you want any answers to questions the forum is usually helpful, but there are a few who want to run your life for you as well :lol:

Hell I have stupidly borrowed money for a race car, it's real smart when you are paying off $12 worth of scrap, but hey YOLO and I wouldn't have been able to drive a car quicker than most on here would get the opportunity to.

It doesn't bother me too much, I've come from a similar situation from my old forum that were related to my current car.

Didn't expect my post to get this sort of banter this early though but, banter is banter and it is entertaining to read and watch.

Jeo mate, just to clear this all up. I understand and respect the advice given by you and a few of the other members, but the advice just isn't for me currently, I don't wish for you to take it as a personal attack. I respect and appreciate the advice given from all of the people so far, as it shows they are willing to give advice which is great! But as some have said, advice is advice nothing more nothing less.

You sound like a polite, educated young person. Welcome to the forum. I would be happy to help you evaluate a car if you need some assistance, we have two fives in the family. I am in brissy. By the best mx5 you can afford. I also spend time with the seller sussing them out as well as the car.

Its a great forum......plenty of passionate people.

Joe, there's no need to take it personally. You've given some advice, albeit rather opinionated, and the other person disagrees, that's all there is to it.

Yup

You are forgetting the simple fact that CatchyD is wanting to get into "the obsession" any way he can, and is showing genuine enthusiasm, and you're throwing a spanner in the works.
It seems to me ChatchyD is an intelligent youngen' and has thoroughly thought this through.

CatchyD, you are more than welcome to our meetings as magpie stated, keep checking the events section, and if you want someone to come inspect a car with you I'm more than happy to put my hand up.

Thank you guys for the kind words!

I will be sure to message around to the people that have offered to help when I go to check out a car sometime.

I am checking out Magpie's "Red MX5" tomorrow, or today seeing as it's nearly 1 am, so hopefully that goes well, as it does seem like a promising deal for the amount he has requested.
Waiting on some responses from some other sellers I have found so shall hopefully come across something soon that is a good purchase for the price.

Can't wait to get my own MX and come along to some of the events held here and finally get back into working on my car again.

CatchyD came and had a look at the Red NA today (I put the car on stands so he could get under and have a look). It was a pleasure to meet you

It is good to see that there is some youth wanting to get into such an old car. I also took him for a drive in what you could do to one

The red NA has a hesitation around 2-3k (I normally don't let the revs drop below 3k) so I need to have this looked at by MX5 Plus apart from that I think CatchyD enjoyed the drive in the Red NA (he went round the same roundabout twice).

My advice to him was have a look around (there is a NA8 with hardtop for $4,500 on here at the moment). Other things to look for are clean drain holes as some people forget to clean these out and dints where the battery has not been secured properly.

Good luck with finding your obsession MX5.

Was excellent!
Was quite interested in your red car and quite enjoyed the experience of the blue car!

Shall be checking out another red NA6 shortly going for a nice 5'500 which has a few small mods done to it, that looks very tidy and well kept (even comes with hardtop).
Shall certainly be checking the things you showed me today when I go to inspect the vehicle and shall be interesting to see how it's motor runs compared to yours.

Kinda wish fellow forumites would be less kind and forthcoming to me because in last few years I sold my MX-5, I've dríven about five times more MX-5's than I did in over 10years of ownership. Yous guys are cruel

you mean the silver one? If so It's not an NA8 but an NA6 with NA8 engine and chassis stiffening, but at that price it seems decent enough with the hardtop included, but the exterior and no soft-top might be deal-breakers.

Re. a replacement soft-top. If you want to minimise the outlay and are happy to consider a 'previously loved' top, keep an eye on ebay for tops being offered on wrecked MX5s. Keep in mind the NB soft-top is identical to the NA's top. I picked up a used top with a glass window and frame for half the price of a new one with the plastic screen. :mrgreen:

Viewing went pretty well actually, Steampunk kindly came along and viewed the car with me.
It ran mechanically well and the exterior was in decent condition, apart from small sections of paint missing it was good. Interior was fairly clean apart from a dash and shroud crack, however the seller has another full dash setup so I shall be asking him to replace the broken parts before I go to buy it. It came with a Hardtop (but no soft), G4 Coilovers, Exhaust system, 15x8 D hole steelies which will be getting replaced after purchase so will be up for sale and a OMP deep dish steering wheel (which I wish to replace with either a stock wheel or another aftermarket one as its dish is way too well, dish and I can't reach the indicator stalk easily without removing my hand from the wheel.

The driver's side window gets jammed after winding down about 5-10cm so shall have to look into that if I buy it.

I offered the guy 4'500 for it and he said he would take that, he's agreed to hold off the other buyer's until he hears my final verdict, which I will hopefully be giving him today.
Overall, I am pretty happy with it.

sounds to me like a flawed car and one without a rwc. Its probably better to pay more and get a better car. Unless I am mistaken - easy not knowing your State rules then you may have a problem in even being able to transfer and drive a car without a RWC? In Vic its a big red flag not buy cars without a RWC. With known faults these have to be rectified.

I've always bought cars with out the roadworthy in Qld, gives you a better opportunity to bargain the price down.

Technically the car must have one when advertised for sale and must have one when transferring rego, but the grey area is who needs to get the road worthy.

Softops are no problems to get second hand. I have one in my garage, plastic window in reasonable condition that will get you out of trouble. Wheels are no problems either, plenty about, again I have a set of 15x6 wheels that my car had when I bought it that can be had for a couple of slabs of premium beer from either a family brewer in South Australia or a premium lager from the north of Tasmania :lol:

If the current owner is willing to fix, or supply the bits to sort out the niggles and if it has plenty of rego then it sounds like a good buy. If you need to get bits fixed, then opportunity for a dodgy day as well.
