Cost of spraying a na6..?

Postby Streetkings » Mon Jan 13, 2014 4:34 pm

Hey guys, just recently bought my first 89' mx5 na6.. And the body is straight but could do with a spray now I've looked at quotes for wrapping the car and I don't think I want to go down that path.. So would anybody be able to tell me a rough cost for respraying a na6 (whole car incl. engine bay, door jams, etc..) and a cost for just respraying the exterior of the car but including door jams..?

Any help is appreciated :-)

Thanks guys

too broad a question.
colour change?
are you doing the prep work or want a drive in drive out?
type of paint?

You'll find people on boostcruising that offer like a $1500 painjob in any colour for a "doors closed" type job.

Could cost close to $5K for a decent job (drive in drive out)

AS above, depends on quality of the job, colour, brand of paint, type of paint, how much work you do vs the shop.

For reference, I got a quote of about $2,000 to vinyl wrap an MX5. There's a lot of labour in wrapping a full car properly.
But, there's also a lot of labour in painting it properly, and a half decent paint job will probably cost a similar amount.

just take the car to a panel shop nearby and talk to them, they can give you options and a baseline on price.

As with a lot of things, there's no point asking for a quote on a forum. Ask the people who will actually do the job.

I wouldn't expect it to cost anything less than 4k
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Send a PM to billybunter, he resprayed his NB SE at home so knows what it costs to DIY it, and do it well.

If you prep it, you can get it painted in 2k for about a grand at the cheaper places.

But a good painter will want to do the prep work himslelf so he knows what surface he is painting onto.

The cost will depend what type of job you are after.

My NA6 cost $6500 for a "closed door" respray in 2 pack, but that included fitting a guard I supplied and some panel beating on a rear quarter, new beaver panel on the back and general tidy up of the whole car. Two years later it still looks great and aside from a couple of stone chips. The paint job was very cheap for what I got done.

The paint job from the same shop for my Charger will be closer to $10k plus about $35k in body work to prep, but I am wanting a concourse standard job so I have to pay, plus I am getting it done on black on black so the body has to be perfect.

I have had cars done in acrylic for very cheap, cost of materials for one and if you take care of the paint you will get around 5 years out of it still looking good, but I used to wash the car religiously every week and wax it every 3 months with a full detail every 12 months taking all the polish off and starting again.

The car I am currently building, I will be looking for the cheapest 2 pack job I can get done, hopefully under $1000 as it is the new race car and I only need a "20 foot" paintjob.

Best bet would be to talk to a painter and see what they will give you for what dollars and compare with what you are after in terms of quality.

Agree with Matt. Unless you know them, anyone who does a good job wants to do the prep themselves. If you walk in off the street, good ones will say no to you doing prep. Basically, they're not sure on the quality of your work, if any chemicals are used and what, and don't want to have to do prep after quoting you for no prep when you may have not done prep to the level they need. If they're good, they won't want to release a car that the finish isn't great due to lack of prep and spoil any good reputation they have. It's not a risk they'll want to take.

If you find someone who does good work and will let you do the prep, awesome. Most good painters won't though.

Not sure where you're located, and I have no idea on the quality of their work, but there is a mob in Bayswater who do closed door sprays for about $600. You do all the prep, they spray the paint. If you're not too fussed on the finish and just want a colour, maybe try them. I doubt clear coat will be included in that and I'm not sure on coverage allowed for (as in, how many coats). Just heard about them a while back. I was actually tempted to give them a go, as I'm not overly fussed on exceptional paint.

If you're looking for an exceptional job, the bloke we used trained with us but set up his own shop about 15 years ago. It will cost you about 10k though.
