Look in this forum for user Guran.
He races in the "stock na6" group.
That's what can be done in stock 1.6 form at best I would say.
If you can be bothered waiting for a 1.8 then do so, but the fact is you could get a 1.6 now and get in to it.
Also, I'd be looking at suspension, allignment, brakes and tyres as the first mods rather than turbo.
You are in Vic, so suggest you look at buying user "lightyear" car

Re: Will I be happy with the MX 5?
Light years car looks yo be good value, but I think a stock example would be best, particularly to race in said classes.
1.6 or 1.8, I will be biding my time for one well priced (funds are tight) and in decent condition.
As much as I would love one right away, its never the proper way to buy a car!
Also I have a color preference to white/blue. Do not want a red one!

Re: Will I be happy with the MX 5?
Regarding track work and mods, I just do street sprints (compete against yourself pretty much improving your times etc) at my local track and its so much fun. Iv looked at motorkhanas but they look way to confusing to me lol.
Mods, start with either coilovers or a good shock and spring setup, good wheel alignment running some camber and toe etc, swaybars, tyres, atleast good brake pads on the front and Id highly recommend getting braided/stainless steel brake lines. These improve the pedal feel massively under hard braking. Stock brakes should be fine for track work with stock power levels just run some street/track brake pads. I use Hawk HP+ and they are brilliant.
Main thing to remember though is just go out and enjoy yourself and go at a pace you feel comfortable with.

Re: Will I be happy with the MX 5?
Agree regarding suspension first, will be my first mod.
But after reading about some of the classes for racing, I think I would be best suited to race in the "standard" NA class (no mods) just to get a feel for the car and get some experience.
Then would hopefully progress onto the other classes where modifications are allowed.
Haha I agree about motorkhana's looking confusing! But they look like alot of fun!

Re: Will I be happy with the MX 5?
Many different series outside of the MX5 club event run with a <1600cc as the smallest capacity class, with 1600-2000cc as the next step up. It's certainty not a big deal in the short run but could be something you regret later if you were to get an 1800 powered car.
I mentioned it on the previous page but don't be afraid of khanas. They do look confusing from the outside but once you've walked the test before hand, you'll pick up the given pattern very quickly. I've been doing khanas for a couple of years now and while I have gone the wrong way a couple of times, I've never stuffed up the same test twice and actually recorded no time. It's not as complicated as it looks.

Where can I find out about the other events?
And isn't the 1.6 a 1600cc making it in the 1600 to 2000cc class anyway?

Hmm..
Which would be better suited to me? the NB or the NA?
Purely talking about track time here, regarding sprints in the most beginner friendly classes.

Re NA6 vs NA8
At the recent NSW/VIC Interstate Challenge there was 0.2s between 1st and 3rd place in standard NA class. I was 2nd in my NA6, with the other two spots going to Rob and Noel in a dual-entered NA8. It's VERY close! NA8 has a bit more power but NA6 has a little less weight and shorter gearing (4.3 diff ratio). My recommendation is to go for a stock NA6 which means you'll have more choice of cars for sale, the MX-5 Club of Victoria sprint rules allow you to add a catback exhaust (not permitted in NSW Club rules), and you'll still be in under 1600cc class if you move to state supersprints. Have a read of my garage thread if you want to see how much fun it is to run a standard NA6 at club trackdays and state supersprints.
The MX-5 Club of Victoria website has everything you need to get started with sprints or motorkhanas. Read it all and then feel free to ask more questions if you have any.

Re: Will I be happy with the MX 5?
They are a bunch of boy scouts on here so someone has to tell you the truth.
No - you will hate it.
When you get your first flat tire your girlfriend will have to hug the flat as it wont fit in the boot. She will enjoy this. (Not)
Mean boys in 4WD utes will pick on you and say things that hurt your feelings.
Your girlfriend's father will laugh at you and say things like "So - you're a hairdresser?"
You will develop an anxiety complex in heavy traffic when the diff of the truck in front is at eye level and the 4WD behind doesn't seem to have noticed you as he changes lanes.
You will be a bad driver in anything else as you will brake too late and try to go through roundabouts 15klms/hr too fast.
You will be ruined for any other sort of car for the rest of your life.
You have been warned.

Haha that's funny, true though.
Iv always thought about what would I do with the wheel if I had to put the spare on... Funny about the 4x4 thing too when driving next to a lifted patrol or something the top of the mx5 is level with the top of the big muddies they are running lol wouldn't be so funny if they did drive over the top of you though.
