Having just bought my MX - I can tell you I am very familiar with it being called a "hairdresser's car" by friends and family.

...until I take them for a spin in it.

My own father (who to be honest, is past driving fun and has dríven Mazda 6's, Accord Euros and the like for the last 20 years) was totally against the little sports car until we went for a quick drive. Then he was all "Goes around corners on rails!", "Gee she's quick!" and "Can I have a turn?" If nothing else, the MX can certainly turn a hater around quick.

Being stopped on the side of the road with the hood up on the weekend though? That drew a lot of taunts. Mostly from idiots in Commodores, but enough people in non-bogan cars stopped to offer help - "Such a shame for a beautiful car..." was one we heard a few times.
Because reasons.

About 4 months ago my CAS went on my car. Stalled in the right hand lane in peak hour traffic on the highway, copped plenty of abuse from idiots in commodores so I know what you're talking about..

People are definitely harsh towards the car, but everyone who is harsh has never been in one.

My theory to this is that the mx5 is labelled as a 'gay' car.

'Gay' technically means 'happy'

Therefore, it is 100% correct.

My mx makes me so very blatantly gay, everyday.

Edit: To add my little 'convert' story - There was a cleaner at work who kept giving me sh*t for having an mx5 until the night I offered him a ride home. First half of the drive he was holding on tight, white as a ghost and not making a noise. Then he realised that indeed it was a wonderful car, handled like a dream (hence the holding on tight ;) ) and at the end of the drive he had a massive smile on his face, looked at me and said - "ƒü¢k that was fun. But it's still gay."

Good enough for me :P

not sure why people are so thin skinned about this. The MX5 never was and never will be a macho car ike a Corvette or a Shelby Mustang or AC replica or a Posrsche Turbo but its still the best selling sports car ever and they cannot all be hairdressers- or can they?

The AC Cobra Mr M was originally the Ace before someone put flares and a massive V8 in it, and I very much doubt that anyone would call an AC cobra a gay car these days.

Maybe the same will happen with the MX5 :?: , but at the end of the day as long as the owner enjoys driving it that's all that really matters :D
