Quick update - I took the MX for a "spirited" run last night, seemed to run without incident.

It was a comparatively cool night to the middle of the day on Saturday (probably a 20 degree difference!), but I kept the revs up and went for maybe two hours.

The only thing I noticed was twice at traffic lights (once on the way out, maybe 5 minutes in, and once on the way home), while in idling in neutral the revs dropped and rose quite dramatically for maybe 30 seconds - to the point where I thought it would stall.

Does that help/ring any bells?

As Speed Freak mentioned recently, Automotive Plus advised him NB8B's do weird things every so often, which can be difficult to diagnose precisely:

It's usually one or more of the troika of cam position sensor; crank position sensor; or EGI relay. And very occasionally it's a water damaged ECU. MX5 Mania have both cam position sensor & crank position sensor at good prices. See ebay or wreckers for an EGI relay:

However, in your case it might initially be worth clearing the fault codes from the ECU if any (disconnect the battery & pump the brake pedal a few times), & resetting base idle: http://www.miata.net/garage/KnowYourCar/S7_Idle.html

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I'll try checking the idle speed, but I've booked her in for a service with Automotive Plus to check her over - see if there's anything else that's broken that I don't know about.

I suppose it'll be one of those "wait and see" things - it's not like we have many days over 40, and to be honest, it was kinda silly of us to head out in that kind of heat anyway.

Until it becomes more of a problem, I might just have to order some spares and keep them in the garage...
