MX5 project with 2GR-FE Aurion Engine

Postby Xauterus » Thu Jan 02, 2014 8:16 pm

Hello. I am using the Aurion 3.5 Litre V6 in a rear wheel drive platform. I would like to know of other peoples conversions and how they went with engine mounts etc.

Basically I am using a 2GR-FE with an adaptor plate from the USA to suit a LS/small block chev bellhousing, then a Tremec TR6060 six speed to a R32 Skyline diff centre and axles. I have modified Skyline drive flanges to fit the MX5 rear hubs so I have a 5x114.3 stud pattern. The track is remarkably close to the original MX5 track. I have some 18" x 8.5 Work Professors for the rear. For the front I have MX5 uprights with RX7 hubs. The front wheels are 18x10" Work Professors. I willl get the rears widened so they have some decent dish. I hope to run the engine with an Adaptronic E1280.

I did some 2GR searches but can find much information on them in Australia, when they are in other cars. I did find an offroad racer using one with aftermarket rods and pistons, ported heads, stock cams and twin turbos making 600kw!!!

I would seriously be happy with over 300 killer wasps. I am going to make new front and rear cradles with longer A arms etc. I would really like to know peoples thoughts on improving the MX5 suspension geometry. I would like to try to use the Yaris electric power steering.
This is for competition use so any mods dont have to be passed for rego. I am also looking for advice on dry sumping the engine.

Not sure if this is the best place for this but it is for race car that will start out doing hillclimbs and sprints.

Thanks
Corey

Work professors. If this is serious your pretty much out there on your own.

Use Optimum Kinematics to answer your suspension questions.

What is the issue with the Work wheels?
I am happy to listen to any advice. I needed the 18 inch wheels to fit the brakes.

I assume your thinking about boosting the engine to make that many ponies?

Why the v6 rather then an LS swap out of interest? "Because" is a perfectly ok answer.

I assume you've already looked at the v8 roadster subframe for the front?

Have you considered doing this swap into an Exocet frame if it's just a track car? Might give you more options.

What makes you think you need brakes that big?

I picked the V6 due to its solid bottom end and its modern tech. And a mate is a toyota fan and he will be doing the wiring, ecu side of it. I am hoping the weight distribution will be better too with the shorter engine. I would have been disowned if i went the LS route haha.

I will need to look up the V8 roadster subframe, any links?

I went for 18s dues to the tyre choices available. 16s and 17s are dead sizes in racing tyres.

The 6.0 litre chev has 250kw stock, the 3.5 litre Aurion engine has 225 kw stock

Because Work never made Professors LOL. SSR make Professors. Work make Meisters which are available in 2 piece welded or 3 piece bolted together.

another guy put one in a AE86..
Had a couple of hickups...(spun a bearing due to not being installed as tilted as it is in the aurion and therefore not enough oil etc etc)

Eventually made 194.7rwkw.

Check it out. Different car but might give you some info.

Heres are couple of pics, just picked the gearbox up today. Very early days yet. Shed is a work in progress, when thats done I will get started properly.

I am looking for a much stronger front upright. The MX5 one is not going to cope with a 18x11 wheel with a slick tyre. Does anyone have a suggestion for an upright? I was considering soemthing like an RX8 one. There are not too many production cars with A arm suspension. I was hoping I wouldnt have to fabricate an upright.

This is 18x10 but I have a wider band to put on the outside. The tyre needs a wider rim.
