Hell, I didn't realise they were that heavy, or could even be made that heavy - give them a miss.

It's surprising how heavy the stock rims are and is very noticeable when lifting them to swap between them and the 6ULs; the guys at Beaurepaires who fitted my 6UL tyres were quite impressed since they'd never seen the 6UL before.

Here's one of MINX's photos showing the difference:

- the 6UL has a BFG 225/50/15 tyre on it rather than the more common 205/50/15 or preferable 225 "225/45/15 tyre"; the latter two would make the 6UL combination even lighter again.

What offset do we need for the MX5?


These are great rims but are quite expensive and are the only other rims I'd consider than the 6ULs.

The stock NB offset is +40 and +/- 5 is OK so either of their 15" rims is fine, as is their 16" rim. Avoid their RPF01 rim though, it won't accommodate our big brake kits.

Well here's a pic of the 15" version fitted, on a fairly heavily lowered car too.
Would be nice to be able to see the 16" though..... Still it's the first rim that I actually like other than the OEM!

I had one of the carbing/ mazdaspeed 2 point braces. It's stupid light and if you put one end on the ground you can easily flex it by pushing down with one arm.

I would have just kept it for the the brake brace but sold it to cash up for a helmet.

Note that there's aluminium and steel versions of the Carbing braces, I think the MAZDASPEED variants are aluminium though. You'd need a dosage of gamma rays and would have to get angry to flex the steel version.

Were they on 15x7, 15x7.5 or 15x8 rims though? 225/50/15, that's sick. With the stock suspension set up would you get any scraping on the guards at all? What's the benefit in going with the 225/45/15, other than less weight?

So today I went out and bought my first performance based mods.....

I've taken a bit of a punt and basically bought a complete MX5 Mania Stage 1 kit + Inlet elbow..... Second hand! :o
These were removed from the seller's car when he went, shall we say, a little more adventurous with the mods on his car.
(I still don't want to think about that Haltec Dash...No I don't need one....NO...)

The condition is pretty good, apart from the intercooler, and hopefully it'll all clean up ok and I can source the few missing bolts and clamps easily.
For the price I paid, well..... It was just too good a deal to pass up and hopefully will allow the budget to stretch a little further for other mods down the track. :)

As they say, without pictures it never happened so here are all the bits after I unloaded them from the car when I got home.

100% agree! Those are the only style of aftermarket rims I really like (I'm still looking though). They look sick. I might even like the Enkei wheels a little more, however because I'm poor I'd lean towards the 6UL :lol:

They were on 15x8's. MINX bought the 225/50/15 BFGs because 225/45/15s were almost impossible to find in Australia for anything less than $300 per tyre back then. They did rub the front fender lining since they're taller than the stock tyre (225/50/15=23.85" diameter; 225/45/15=22.97" diameter; stock NA/NB tyres are typically 23").

A few tips for the Stage I installation:

1. Just hack the crap out of the OEM elbow hose on the turbo with a Stanley knife since it will be fused with the turbo - your new parts include a new one anyway so you don't need it.

2. Soak the exhaust nuts/bolts in penetration fluid the night before you do the installation, it makes the job easier (ESPECIALLY those 3 at the top of the downpipe).

3. A rattle gun really helps with this job; make sure you use impact wrench sockets, they fit tighter than regular sockets so your chances of stripping nuts/boltheads are reduced.

4. NEVER use 12 point sockets - they round off stiff nuts/boltheads far too easily - Impact wrench sockets are 6-point sockets for a reason.

5. The 3 nuts/bolts on the downpipe where it joins the dump pipe are a real bitch to get at. You can get to two of them from the passenger side wheel well but the 3rd one (on top) requires you to access it from underneath the car, along the length of the downpipe. There's a bracket in the way that attaches to the gearbox so you'll need to remove that too - leave it off. You'll need some long socket extensions to reach it. On James' car we also used wobble bars and flex joints to ensure a flush socket fit on the nut so that we wouldn't strip it - I really can't stress that enough and it helps to have a 2nd set of eyes there to ensure that the socket is sitting flush before you attempt to loosen it.

6. It's not uncommon to snap these downpipe studs so make sure to use the penetration oil and be prepared for such an occurrence (ie. a tow to a mechanic may be needed to get it out). We ended up having to replace a stud on James' car - these are commonly available from SuperCheap/Repco/Autobarn in their "twirly-racks".

7. The rubber exhaust hangers will be fused to the exhaust hangers. The easy way to get the exhaust off them is to take a thin screwdriver, pass it between the metal hanger and rubber and squirt in some silicon spray, then they will slide off easily.

The exhaust is a big job so allow a day for it since you have to take off all the underside bracing too - that's when you'll appreciate your rattle gun.
