I think you are all missing the point, the event is being run by the Benalla Auto Club, I am a member of that club, I am a committee member of that club. The MX5 club is tagging onto "our event" I am a member of the club running the event.

Why not let people race if they want to race, if they have a race licence and car that complies, pay the nominal series fee and go racing and have some fun! Don't force people into becoming members of clubs, let them join if they want, and make sure you give them enough benefits to join. That way you will have members that want to be there, not members that are forced to be there.

I cannot see this argument going anywhere so I am going to leave it at that.

Let's calm down, eh.

Any MX-5 driver will be welcome to race at any of these rounds. You do NOT have to be an MX-5 Club member to enter these events.

The MX-5 Cup is a championship based upon the results of these events. Only MX-5 Club members (from any state) will be eligible to enter the MX-5 Cup championship, earn points at these rounds, and be in the running for trophies and other prizes at the end of the series.

Simple.

I think the clubs need to respect the venues more than the other way round.

We have way more clubs than venues and mx5 club has some of the least motorsport credibility with the hand timing and other odd little self imposed rules.

In fact, to even get a license with the AKA, you ** must ** join a club. No choice!

Sorry but you are way off the mark here. The nsw mx5 club runs track days that are full subscribed month in month out, with 80+ cars, and these cars include some very very quick well pedalled ones.

I have been to two or three mx5 days they are a polite joke and many don't come back if they aren't going for the social aspect.

Sick of all the pandering and unionising of Australian grassroots
Motorsport it's a joke you will only realize this if you talk to someone from other countries.

The mx5 cup rules should be super easy just copy USA spec miata rules verbatim but Aussies don't like fair spec racing they just want to bathe in the halo of it in name only.

That may be your opinion, but lots will disagree.

The MX5 Club NSW track days are well subscribed, and obviously cater for a particular market. They do it their way, run one of the best organised club days I have attended, and the longevity of their 'formula' speaks for itself.

They are not race meetings, and (unlike some I have attended) do not attempt to run a race meeting under the guise of a track day. If you come to one looking for a faux race meeting, you will be disappointed. If that is what floats your boat, better look elsewhere.

As for MX5 Cup, it's only another set of rules, there is nothing particularly magic about it. How many sets of rules do we need/want/ ... ? The idea has been floated enough, but it has not got the support of those who are walking the walk. If that is what you want, instead of bitching about it, put together a series, and let people vote with their chequebook/cars.

I've been lucky enough to have raced an mx5 in the U.S , it was a 25 hour race much like our 300 k races on steroids , approx 30 % of the field where MX5s ranging from NA spec miatas to playboy cup NCs and pretty well much everthing in between , most of the top teams where there so I got to meet and talk to most of them, in our team we had 3 playboy cup champions , out of the 12 of us 8 race or had raced spec miatas , so I got a good insight to what it takes. some things I learnt a front running 1.8 spec miata engine starts at $8000 usd top teams use at least 2 per season , they produce approx 20 HP more than brand new one from mazda they are unmodified just blue printed as the rules are very tight no mods what so ever, there using 1 to 2 sets of new tyres per weekend admitably they pay a lot less than us for tyres, the cost to run near the front in this series would scare most of us off. What Graig has been putting together I believe will be the cheapest , fairest and most inclusive MX5 racing around , we should congratulate and support him rather than whinge.

As for the MX5 club track days I've done heaps of them over many years, they are the best run and organized around ,always well attended , so to all those who put in there time and effort on a volinteer basis to make it happen for us to have fun, THANKYOU !!! I for one really appreciate it.

Daniel

I find myself in the strange situation of agreeing with all the previous posters... Nathan, Daniel, you're both right.

1. MX5 Club Track Days are the best around. Might make it easier on everyone if the club invested in 100-odd transponders and recouped their investment by renting them to participants... But apart from that, they are great events. The club uses these events to build on their Supersprint success which, over the years, has been considerable. A number have also graduated from these events into super sprints and wheel to wheel racing.

2. Spec Miata racing is fantastic. Yes, the top teams invest $$$, but who is saying that would happen here? We would have to first gain the exposure that the US series has and that is, with respect, not likely. Besides, the cost argument is not fair when the same temptation to spend exists today in all the current series.

REGARDLESS of the series, there will always be the possibility of people spending big $$ chasing the trophy. Equally, there will always be the opportunity for skill to offset the spending. Daniel, you said it yourself - the $8000 in Spec Miata is spent chasing an extra 20hp (if that). That isn't much. Right now, if I race in the MX5 Challenge, that same $8k (which I don't have) could buy someone a tuned turbo setup or a 2.5L engine for their NC, which will yield a hell of a lot more than +20hp!!

MSC has it's own problems (no rule set is perfect), but I think the Showroom spec class has some benefits in this regard.

I am not going to do every round, so there is no point me paying the series fee, I won't be joining the MX5 Club, does that mean I can't race in the MX5 races?

I think that question was already answered - yes you can come and race, but you just won't be eligible for the championship :)
