It bamboozles me why people want to spend 40k on an mx5!!
I can think of 100 ways better spending the 40k

It would cost at least a 100k to run one of those cars for an season.
Motor sport is really expensive, for some people they would be better off getting a drug habit.
People lose, there houses, family's etc... Some people lose it all.

I would start building a Supermiata tomorrow if it were a functioning class. I understand the need for time based classes but it is sad it has come to that. Almost all other mainstream racing requires you to build a car to a set spec and race similar machines. That is racing... This seems to me to be a spending race.

One way of stopping this is to handy cap the winners, with a lead trophe.
So they can't win all the time. 100kg in the boot would slow them down.

Nothing New
“Money is how we keep the score in motor racing nowadays.” Colin Chapman
They Have Spec Racing in the USA but it is common practice to spend big for minor gains
there as well so a tight spec doesn't bring the cost down.
If 6 dollar trophies truly rule your world prepare to spend big and also have a good
look at your talent level there are some participants in "Grass Roots" level who would
be going racing two or three levels higher if they could afford to be, and also some quiet
achievers that were at the top levels 10+ years ago but now enjoying the fun and
lower costs but both are very hard to beat regardless of how fast your car is.

Very true have there are some seriously well prepared teams (teams=big bucks) racing in it.oztrackdays wrote:They Have Spec Racing in the USA but it is common practice to spend big for minor gains

I don't see our market is big enough for that to take off here. As in the US there are a whole lot of people who want to develop their cars, and sure some who would prefer to run close to stock. But maybe not enough of each to have their own comp, so let's run together and have a classing system to keep: everybody happy some of the time; or, some of the people happy all of the time. Hopefully there is a compromise system.

+1 to this. I think I'd rather be in a class where people are spending $$$ to gain a couple of tenths over me, as opposed to the same investment resulting in me losing multiple seconds per lap!
So if there was to be a "class" along these (or similar) lines running around at the rear of the MX5 challenge or MSC pack, I think that would be great. We could race each other on equal terms. Some random basic checks for round winners (compression, cylinder volume, visual ECU check, etc) should keep things clean.

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
So 18 months on and whats happening????
Well still got the "gunna's", the "wouldof's" and the "couldof's" still telling all and sundry how it "shoulda" been done.
PSCRAQ showed that regardless of how easy you try and make it, them who wanna whinge and cry "its all too hard", will continue to
do as they are now, "nuffing" , cause it easier.
So now to what is actually happening,
QLD; PSCRAQ has , from what I've been told (MattR), are basically telling the gt boys to POQ and play in ya own pen,
few other things that don't make that much difference from the last couple of years, everything staying the same??
new comp sec so maybe things might change. The Biggy will be the QR300 in May, so might see a few from down south.MSC are not coming so nuff said!!
NSW; MSC, MRA/ mx5challenge??, and MX5 carclub are all seeing who can confuse the most.
It seems to an outsider from the sticks that the different catagories are more intent in disrupting each other than working together.
Prodsports seem to be continuing the downward spirial as far as production sportcar racing is concerned, maybe need to rename GTCARS and SOMETIME IN THE DARK PAST PRODSPORTS. or GTSDPP.
VIC; Well who needs to say anything, its GT WORLD and if we ignore you pofters in your Mazda's enough you will go away!!! Only real cars race here. ( did anydoby here actually look at the entry list for the Island Magic, my how things have changed in 3 years!!!!)
So has or will anything change? I think it has started to at least up here in QLD and from what I'm hearing the cockroaches are also making headway.
We're still gunna hear whinging and whining from the same few here, about the cheating, the unfair and corrupt running everything and making it all toooooo hard ( gee that sounds familiar) or I don't want to win etc I just want to race but not with fast cars on the track:roll:
As GM said back a bit, make the rules, stick to them and don't make change for the sake of change and they will come and play!!!
Thanks to littledecks, zossy and mazmad for your continuing constructive comments and ideas.
Keep on racing and with a bit of good luck and lots of physiotherapy I might be back soon
Terry

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
Thanks Terry.
MX5 racing is BAAAACCCKKKK! Actually in one sense it never went away down here. With the MRA and AASA racing at Wakefield we have had fields of 7 to 15 mx5s each round this year, thanks to the continued support of Matt Ronke at WP.
But next year we expect to see bigger turnouts.
Under the auspices of the MX-5 Club of NSW, and with the support from Wakefield Park, there will be an MX-5 championship series in 2014 at Wakefield Park, the 2014 MX-5 CUP.
We have had strong interest expressed with large numbers putting their names down to register interest, so if even a portion of these turn up we will have some good racing.
And if we get enough support who knows we could see it at Sydney Motorsport Park too.
You can find a brief outline of the CUP on the club's website
http://nsw.mx5.com.au/motorsport/mx-5-cup
Details will be thrashed out over coming weeks and posted on club site. We invite your input and ideas which can be emailed to mx5cup@mx5.com.au or posted on this forum here:

Edit.... And we hope to see cars from north and south of the border come and race too!!

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
I should clarify too:
This year there were rounds at Wakefield called MRA and also AASA Titles. At each of these there was an mx5 category, usually in their own race at this event. There would be one 'trophy' race at the end of the event at which trophies would be awarded based on finishing positions of that event. But there was no 'season' or points tally counting towards a year long championship.
Next year these races will count towards a championship series. Place getters will accrue points from each race (3 to 6 races at each event depending whether 1 or 2 day event). At the end of the season winners from each class, and an overall championship winner, will be determined based on those with the most points accrued over the season.
These CUP mx5-only races will take place at the Wakefield 300 weekend, and some of the MRA rounds and AASA meets.
So there will be something to play for. And the champ will of course get the $15 plastic trophy.
