Shades of silver...

Postby MX5noob » Fri Dec 20, 2013 9:39 am

Sorry guys I had this posted in general chat but thought it'd be better off here. Ideally someone with a silver NB8A can help me.

I'm about to pick up a L front fender from a wrecker tomorrow- my SE had a crease and scratches in it when I bought it and I thought perhaps I could just replace the whole panel ($150) from the wrecker rather than finding a panel beater.

The donor car is a 1998 NB8A, mine's a late 2004 NB8D SE.

My question is: is the silver the same across the whole of the NB model years? Series 1-4?

I presume mine is Sunlight Silver. I'd hate to pick up the part and realise it doesn't bloody match my paint, knowing that there are all these various names for silver!

Perhaps someone with an early NB can tell me their paint code in the door jamb so I can compare with mine?

For example, on mx5parts.co.uk, it states Sunlight silver was for Mk2.5/Mk3 MX5s, so I presume NB8B onwards, so I'm fearing early 8As have different shades of silver. [url=http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info]http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id=387{1}188

Many thanks in advance!

AFAIK the NB8As silver is also Sunlight Silver 22v. And speaking of paint, yeah.. I got some paint mixed by SCA (supposed to be 22v) and turned out horrible (a few shades darker). Wot a waste of $32.99. Might head to another place to mix another spray can for me.

East Coast Auto (now Repco) on the corner of North Road and East Boundary Road in Bentleigh do custom mixes I think (they've still got the equipment there, so I assume they still do it)

The other option is the paint shop on the corner of Princes Hwy and Blackburn Road, in Clayton. They supply a few panel shops, so they know what they're doing (maybe check with them if they do spraycan mixes, also check they're still there since they are apparently moving soon)

Thanks Shuey. After a suggestion from 93-clubman with a link to another forum on different years' paint codes I think it's a different silver with a different paint code- highlight silver not sunlight silver. Best not to buy the panel then!

Cheers.

Thanks, Nik
I'll check them out. I could live with the 50 Shades of Silver that the SCA mixed paint since it's just on a bumper lip, but if you gonna do something.. I guess best to do it right.

MX5noob, ah I see.. didn't know they may be different. Saw a few 8As and they look like 22v to me, but I may be wrong. Good luck!

They are definitely different, I had the problem the other way around when I had my 1998 NB - the colour on them is Highlight Silver 18G
