Re: Getting an mx-5
^not true in the slightest.
Mine had 104,000km and no wobble.
Got to 109k and started, engine was completely undrivable after 2 months.
5/6 of my na6 friends have snc wobble.

Re: Getting an mx-5
The Short nose issue is only an issue if somebody stuffs up when doing the timing belt, which is why it tends to show up not that long after 100,000km (or 200, or 300)
The problem is that the cars are now 24 years old, so there's been plenty of time for people to stuff it up.
From memory it something about not fitting the key the right way around in the keyway, then after a while it slowly moves and starts chewing at the keyway/key, and after X km it finally shows visibly as a wobble when it's chewed enough away.
Shortnose and longnose can both have the issue, it's just the longnose has the design changed to make it harder to ƒü¢k up (but not impossible)

Re: Getting an mx-5
^^^ +1
The interwebs has blown the SNC out of all proportion when you look at the total number of cars sold.
When doing your inspection of the car do all the usual due diligence checks. If the timing belt has recently been done, ask who did it and whether they are knowledgeable in the 1600 motor. Or even a look at any available service records will give you an idea of where and how it has been serviced. The general presentation of the car will give you a fair idea of what problems you could expect to show up in the near and mid future.
If the rest of the car checks out and depending on the price, it's more than likely worth the risk. Look hard enough and a cheap replacement motor can be found if required, if not you will have years of happy motoring.

I purchased it with 3k kms on the clock in '91 from a lady who bought it new from the Melbourne suburban Mazda dealer she worked at. It had its 1500 km service done where she worked & from then on it had its scheduled services done prior to or just on schedule at a couple of other Mazda dealers in Melb suburbs. The vehicle was completely standard with no AC & no PS, & apart from scheduled servicing nothing else had been done to it, nor had it been to any other workshop.

Yeah, I need to get more hours in at work and I'll buy from someone on the forum probably, so I know it might be in a good mechanical condition

That's a bummer. People have no manners today.
It was a good price but another will come along and every additional $500. you have to spend will get a slight overall upgrade in condition.
Keep looking.

If a seller is too lazy to call you and cancel the inspection because the car sold, there's also a good chance he's too lazy to look after a car properly as well.
