Ignition module Fault, what happens?

Hello all,

If my ignition module has failed what would the symptoms be with my car, apart from the obvious it won't start.

Inaccurate tacho reading. misfiring (as they control the coils), inaccurate ECU readings etc

Any chance it results in no spark and also the fuel pump not running? The engine still turns over though.

Fuel pump not running is controlled by the air flow meter.

As stated above, fuel pump not running sounds like a flapper box (AFM) issue. Can you take off the intake, and with the flapper box wired in & ignition turned on, press the flap inside the box? If you hear the fuel pump engage, good, if not, then the issue is to do with wiring / fuses etc between the AFM and the fuel pump and possibly the ECU.

You could try finding someone else with a 1.6 and switching out parts to see if one of them has failed, but based on your info, it's unlikely to be the ignitor.

Does the ECU throw any codes? There's procedures on the net to plug a LED into the diagnosis connector under the hood and find them out....

You can also test the fuel pump by jumping the FP and Gnd connections in the diagnostics plug in the engine bay.

Did you do anything electrical related to your 5 recently. I frazzled a ignition module in a NA6 by disconnecting the ECU with the battery still connected. In my case the fuel pump still ran.

Check the black 'Fuel Inj' relay in the NA, or green EGI relay in the NB, in the engine bay fuse/relay box. There was a Mazda Technical Service Bulletin for the NA6 Fuel Inj relay in the early '90s, it was an intermittent issue & it was usually also cold start related, & sometimes it wouldn't crank at all. If you turned the ignition off then on again it was fine. There's also a very similar fuel pump relay under the dash on the driver side (RHD).
