It does appear to be a "sand pit" as you say - a sand pit for low cost racers who can't afford CF panels, stroker kits, and 245-275 section tyres. I'm not necessarily against that but that is the market they are pitching to.

But even without the carbon panels, fibreglass are as cheap as metal and easier to fit/replace and source for my car. The engine will be out of spec on even a budget rebuild as I will have to source multiple blocks to find one that will work within the 2% capacity limit, ie only need a hone, unfortunately a similar situation to my old L series motors where we sourced multiple blocks to find one that could be bored out by 3mm. The other option is to sleeve a block, but again not allowed in the rules as I read them.

The tyres I use are chosen because they are cheap, second hand porsche cup tyres for $100 a throw for used quallies up to $270 each for new Achilles slicks in a 270/65/18, the same cost or less than a set of decent r spec tyres in 16", which is the standard wheel diameter for a S14.

As I said in my post, my illegible car will be on the track for $15k with a standard engine, a very cheap race car in the scheme of things. The cost of building an S14 is ridiculously cheap compared to a lot of other cars due to the amount of aftermarket support.

I can see the appeal of the category, but some of the restriction do have the potential to make the build costs more than a well set out of rules with some more freedoms can. The cost is one reason I am building a 2B spec car versus a 2F spec car. The aftermarket parts available to me and the freedoms allowed make for a much cheaper build than to comply with 2F regulations.

Matt that's fair enough I guess. However that 2% rule only applies to showroom. You have 15% grace on engine capacity on modified, which would appear to be where your car would go.

I get the wheel/tyre size issue. One of those things I guess, as many will be breathing a sigh of relief. For those who don't have access to used Porsche Michelins, the restriction is likely to save them some cash.

For the record, I'd love to be able to run 9's or even 10's, but I guess I'm just trying to say that I understand why they would impose the limit...

Forced induction limits you to 2%, to build a na version it's not legal as they weren't sold here and gets very expensive to make a na SR20 with the same power as a turbo one even with the ability to bore/stroke up to 2.3 litres.

Sorry, didn't look too closely at the FI rules ;)

Thankfully for me, big power doesn't always win the day! ;) the 2% rule does seem a bit harsh! that is not much.

Well that was fun :)

Thanks to the event organisers for a well run meeting. Shame there was a bit of biff at the front... while I watched poor Tony spinning around in front of me with his bonnet wrapped over his windscreen, the words "this is a non-contact category" were ringing in my ears... ;) To be fair, I'm not sure what happened, I had Chris's car filling my windscreen at the time...

(Sorry about my camera coming loose... not the greatest vid).

Shame about David's short day, he was very quick. Hope the damage to his car isn't too bad.

Great to meet many of you today too, looking forward to more good racing in the future. Back at our end of the field, the racing was clean and tidy :) Chris, you're a gentleman. My car was almost undriveable in that last race, I should post a pic of what is left of my front left tyre!

I was spectating near turn 1 and it was good close racing throughout the field (especially for 4th, 5th and 6th untill a black BMW got into the back of a MX5 at turn 10 on the last lap. Looked like the MX5 exhaust was broken as well as some panel work).

The BMW vs MX5 mix was good to watch, with Zane in the lonely 86 going well. A good first round, given it was Australia Day and the field was down generally. Well done to the organising group.

A great run by Matilda, good clean laps in the front for a clean sweep of the races, and a great chase by Brian in the BMW - that things handles and stops so well, lucky he doesn't have the horsepower.

The yellow BWM hit was a Days of Thunder moment.
Brian got a great start, but Matilda managed to get up inside, holding Brian out wide into turn 2.
The yellow BMW had a big dive into the gap, pushing Brian even wider and making his life interesting, but ahead of the real drama.
The yellow BMW had to hold in tight and the rear stepped out big time, and a big overcorrect (cold tyres?) resulted in a spin to the outfield, coming to rest with its nose just on the track pointing into the traffic, and a very thick wall of dust.
Cars went every which way to avoid various other cars, but one MX5 had no where to go and just picked up the corner of the BWM, popping the BMW bonnet and apparently causing substantial damage, the hit was just at the wrong angle, but it was so lucky no one nailed it full on.
A typical turn 2 racing incident that could have been very nasty.

An enjoyable spectating day, and it was cool at Wakefield in January !!!

Right Balance of Rules ?

Postby oztrackdays » Tue Jan 28, 2014 2:01 pm

13 Entrants probably 7-10 of Which are Targa Racing Customers and/or and good friends of which is fine.

Probably school holidays kept more away than just the regulations.

But there were "Modern Sports Cars" in the TT race which should really be eligible for this formula.

Look at the Wakefield 300 no rules as such and 90+ entrants and still counting, surely the formula
for an Endurance cup is to embrace entrants rather than exclude.

The popularity of the MX5 Cup will determine how right you are Nathan, the rule set is basically the same as Wakefield 300 but MX5s only.

Very interesting reading on rules and interpretations. Was looking at this series for my Import Spyder. Will have to have a good look through the new rules and see where I fit in? Was looking at swapping the turbo 1ZZ out for a NA 2ZZ that bumps me up 1 class rather than two and put me at the pointy end on paper anyway. See if it will still fit in now?
