Modern Sports Cars returns for 2014!

Modern Sports Cars, the category for affordable mass-produced modern sports cars sold in Australia, released details of their 2014 calendar today. The series is the brainchild of Wakefield Park and Winton Managers, Matthew and Adam Ronke, Production Touring Car and IPRA driver Brian Anderson, and TargaRacing’s Chris Gough and Zane Al Said

There will be 3 endurance events - 26-27 April at Wakefield Park, 5-6 July at Winton, before returning to Wakefield Park for final round on the weekend of 23-24 August. Additionally, there will be a one-day sprint round on 26 January at Wakefield Park.

"We are very excited about the 2014 rounds and welcome aboard our major sponsor Peak Race Tyres. As a result of their support, the events will now be known as the Modern Sports Cars Kumho Tyres Endurance Cup. Prizes will include sets of their excellent race tyres and their support helps keep the costs to a minimum” said Anderson.

Al Said "The inaugural Modern Sports Car event was an outstanding success and the category clearly has great potential. We are proud to have Kumho tyres as the naming rights sponsor for 2014"

There has also been a tweaking of the rules and the introduction of "Hot Hatches" for 3 door cars.

Gough added, "We are very excited about the hot hatches. With the various manufacturers making many small cars it made perfect sense to open the category up to include them. We have already purchased an Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4 turbo and are preparing it for the first enduro event"

So if I am reading the rules correctly my 2.5 NC is excluded, as is Daniel, Carls and Greg Car.

Also are all the NB's that are bored out 2.2 t. 2.5mm in or out? eg: Manias Cars.

When did a 3 door hatch become a Modern Sport Car?

Bugger, my 2B spec S14 underway isn't eligible on about 6 items going through the tech spec's.

Looks like it will be a fun series.

+1 to 'Magpie'!--It was only posted a couple of days ago that there were 2(TWO) Qld races to relish. Seems like making decisions 'on the run', but something is better than nothing. Fortunately my car is temporarily in Vic, (where there was also an event mooted), so I can make the 1st at Wakefield(Jan 26 if that's still on?) on the way home!:-)

from my reading of it you can't Greg...

Go and read the CAMS 2B prod sports rules... it is legal as it is derived from the same family of engine block (being MZR) for prod sports, which was the rules this series originally used.

Yep, the 2% and 6% rules will pick up the significantly bored engines in showroom and sports class and certainly the 2.3L and 2.5L NCs, and the conrod length rule will pick up the stroked engines. The head and block rule would also eliminate them from modified.

The "downstream" intake rule in showroom should be amended (2.3.1.11) - as I read it now, intake manifolds are free but the TB and standard air box must be retained. ??? Doesn't make sense - I think they meant "upstream"?

There are no intake rules for "Sports" class listed, so does that mean intake is free for Sports? Are ITBs legal for an NA or NB in sports?

3.10 would suggest that tyres are free in sport class as long as you don't exceed the max wheel width - but if that is the case, rule 3.10.1.2 is superfluous.

I can see how there is some concern over these rules as most people will need to make some mods to their cars to fit into the right class...

To clarify my comments. I'm not fussed on where my car fits into the classes (if it does due to a bore/stroke of 85mm), I'm a bit down that there was going to be some interstate rounds, however it is now NSW centric.

Edit, just received an email back from Chris about where my car fits into this competition and I must say thanks for the quick reply. Based on the info I provided my car would be eligible as a class B. Plus I have to make my splitter legal as well as get an AASA log book. Now to sort work days off.

Thanks Craig-must admit I'm trying to digest it 'on the 'fly' and was working on the previous iteration with 'class D' "all F I" and an interesting QLD quirk of 'precedent' where "engineered' F.I. vehicles met DOT consideration as OEM. (aka no citation/defect). Splitting hairs really, but interesting concept all the same.
Fact is that since I've committed to 'dedicate the red car(complete with your old wheels) as a 'Track Beeatch', I have another powerplant sourced as an alternative:) BTW-nearly made the 'last' Wakefield meet, but '14 will be more in control:) Watch this space.

the way I read it our 2B cars are ineligible because of the block swap, our 2 2F NCs are also ineligible as they started life as JDM cars which under rule 1.2.1.3 have enough diference to Aus delivered models to make them non compliant. A bit confussed but might be able to run them in modified but this is not very clear, plus it would be like turning up at a gun fight with a knife, waste of time and money. disapointing , don't think we'll be running

So JDM (Japenese Domestic Market) under the rules all Jap Imports dont comply. Thats every NC I ever built plus half the NBs and NAs.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, it is always good to see what is picked up when rules are published for the first time, even after the rules have been reviewed by multiple people over the previous weeks.

Just a couple of clarifications:

1. Yes it appears we have our inlet streams going the wrong way. Will fix that error.

2. Rule 1.1.1.1. is the major rule in that if the rules do not say you can do a modification, then that modification is not legal.

3. At the start of the sports and modified sections it states the rules for the pervious section can be used. The rules are written so that the level of modification flows from showroom to sports to modified. eg, the tyre and inlet rules for Sports is the same as showroom. So ITB are not legal for sports class (unless standard).

4. The intention was not to exclude imported cars. We will need to clarify this.

5. Also remember these rules are written for multiple types of cars just not MX5s.

Keep up the reviews and publish any questions.
