Re: Hellmun's NB8B
I'm going to drop by Deckers on Tuesday to check out a few things he has been working on. Your build is going to be awesome mate! Cannot wait to see it in action. p.s I have significantly stiffened my front end. Stole a few ideas from you as per the usual

I should not have giggled at this. I am secretly 8 years old.

Re: Hellmun's NB8B
So probably about time I made an update, car was off the road for about... 18 months including about about 3-4 months at Deckspeed being rebuilt last year. I'll add pictures at a later point but for now here's how the car sits.
First new engine platform, I've bought an NB8A engine rather than another SVT engine so I could get cams, cam gears and tune for more power later down the track. For now though it's a completely stock head, Daniel had a look at it and it'd recently been reconditioned on the donor motor so it got left alone. The motor was bored, the rotating assembly balanced and it was put back together with a MBSP (Main Bearing Support Plate) from another 01 donor engine plus an SE rocker. All the bits used are below.
Engine
Supertech 83.50mm 8.6:1 Pistons
Carillo Super A beam rods
Boundary Engineering Race High pressure oil pump +10psi
Davies Craig eletric waterpump (Aluminium version)
AWR Motor mounts
Fuel
Conversion to NB8A returning fuel system(NB8B is returnless)
725cc injector Dynamics fuel injectors
Bosche 044 motor sport pump
2 litre fuel surge tank in-boot.
Cooling
76mm custom twin-pass PWR radiator core + Blitz 1.3 bar rad cap
Setrab 19 row oil cooler
Deckspeed hot-side coolant reroute
Turbo
Genuine SP Turbo manifold + factory Dump Pipe
Garrett GT25/60R Turbo
Nissan Inconel Stud kit from SR20DET
2.5” outlet Tube/Fin Intercooler (450 x 300 x 76mm I think)
Turbo Smart Street Boost controller
Turbo smart 34mm Kompact plumb-back BOV
Custom 3" straight through exhaust
Haltech PS1000
Misc
Mazda competition H/D front swaybar mounts
Super Miata Wilwood Big Brake Kit 11"
TSE Brake Duct shields + piping
MiataRoadster long handle short shifter kit
I ordered a lot of parts from US (mostly Emilio at 949) and Daniel put it together awesomely. The engine is smooth, the catch-can stays empty and I truly fear for my gearbox with this motor! It made 220kw at 14psi with a little boost drop after 6500rpm. Though it feels plenty fast on 11psi which it can hold to redline and still makes over 190kw. I was getting bored before where I felt like I basically would only go as fast as conditions allowed... that is no longer an issue. I have a lot to learn on how to drive this thing... at 5000rpm and %20 throttle it's spinning wheels the atmo engine couldn't turn at 7000rpm and %100.
So far it's done two trackdays, first one I spent the whole time looking at gauges as the car overheating a little. Found a minor leak at the electric water pump which was fixed with an extra turn on a worm drive clamp ( I have T-bolts to replace them shortly). Then last trackday I finally got to drive it fast and watch the track instead of the gauges. The oil just reaches 105C after 6 laps flat out and the coolant was at 80-95C all day. Lower temps than when it had 90kw.... So far with some mediocre driving I've already gone over 3 seconds faster and on low boost to boot.

Re: Hellmun's NB8B
Fastest lap of last trackday with a Gran Turismo overlay from the DL1 datalogger.
Has a mis-shift, I basically spin across the finish line and it was a warm windy day....but it's still 2.5 seconds faster than I've ever been round that track! Boost > years of practice, research and 90kw as it turns out.

I was chatting to pat over the phone and pointed out the GT overlay, very cool choice

Is that a 1:09ish lap? Very nice! congrats on the smooth driving too . Having dríven BJ's car with similar power levels I appreciate how much effort and skill is required to make it look that smooth! (i.e far more than I possess)

Re: Hellmun's NB8B
Caff, Mark was doing 1:09s BEFORE adding boost. Now with boost he's done 1:06.93 in lousy conditions and with a relatively cautious approach to some key corners. Seriously fast!

Re: Hellmun's NB8B
Some new updates but unfortunately lacking pictures until I sort out some hosting. I've been burning through main relays since I went turbo which I thought might be related to my new loud friend the Bosch 044 fuel pump. From reading around about it it can draw up to 30amps which is quite a load increase on the main relay which gets hot enough as it is on a standard car. So what I've done is buy a 100A solid state relay, some 8 gauge wiring, 40A inline fuse and wired the pump direct to the battery. The relay is still switched on by the ECU but hopefully this should save my new relays (I bought 3 from the USA just in case anyway).
Next I've installed the TSE 11.75" big brake kit, I can see how even though it's only barely bigger diameter (approximately 280mmvs298mm) and the same width as the previous ones(22mm) the vents are shorter leaving an extra 2mm of meat in the rotor. The attachment points between the hat and friction ring look much tougher and it has more attachment points in total. The friction ring itself feels much heavier compared to the 949 11.00" one. The attachment bracket for the caliper is also significantly better than the wilwood unit which needed washers to align it properly. Unfortunately the old Advanti racing wheels I was using as street wheels don't fit even with the provided 5mm spacer so I'm back to the 17"s that were on the car when I bought it. With DTC60's pads and the bigger diameter rotor the brakes seem to have a stronger initial bite compared to carbs and the 11.00", time will tell how well these will survive at the track though.
My previous brake setup was definitely massively overheated, the pads themselves are warped/kinked so badly they actually have taper (both the leading and trailing edges of the pad are bent into the rotor and the middle is kinked out) . Even high-temp loctited and torqued to spec the bolts backed out of the rotor hats and similarly the 17mm bolts on the caliper bracket had also loosened though they were torqued to spec and loctited. I was conscious I'd be seeing high brake temps so I made sure I went for a cool-down run outside Wakefield but this clearly wasn't good enough.... I'm definitely going to invest in a lockwire kit now.
Lastly..the turbo has claimed another victim already. 2nd trackday on a new china hub and it's already contracted wakefield-itis. Probaly 1mm play in the front left bearing ...even armed with the super grease Amsoil 2000. The grease around the hub nut was actually grey though so it may have just been cooked by the huge brake temps. Still I might take this as an opportunity to try some blueprint ball bearings in my spare hub and see how that goes as it didn't have play when I took it off (I rebuilt 2 new china hubs with Amsoil and put them in together due to an existing hub being dead). Will have to wait until the weekend to measure the ball bearing sizes though...then order some ebay G10's... If that doesn't work... I'll see Deckspeed about those billet front hubs with replaceable commodore bearings.

Mark, the old rotors were lockwired weren't they? Please tell me 'yes' ...
I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

Re: Hellmun's NB8B
They were torx heads and they weren't that big a head... so it simply wouldn't have been possible. The new ones use bigger regular hex heads pre-lock wired.

Interesting! I am surprised that anyone would sell a kit without pre-drilled bolts - live and learn!

What happened to my pads
What happened to the loctited but only Wilwood spec tightened bolts on the hat...
The effect that had on the friction ring...
