The costs you mentioned are hardly exorbitant. A replacement engine - which some sort of useful guarantee and an engine swap- one out and one is quite a lot work and most shops are charging similar rates per hour. You will need to advise Vic roads of engine changes. You could also contact MX5 Factory for a quote as well.

Today I finally picked up my car. Ended up getting a 70,000km b6 long nose fitted with new water pump, timing belt, clutch flywheel and other basic maintenance done to the car. Cost a whopping big sum over $3000. I was assured that the car will be fine for the next 100,000 before a timing belt service and the regular 10,000km service (although I'm every 5k).
So I accepted it and just looked forward to getting back to driving it trouble free.

Took the car straight away heading towards the dandenong mountains.
After 15mins driving in pure bliss and happiness the temp gauge rapidly rose to high.
Freaked the ƒü¢k out and let it cool for 15 minutes and then turned around and started drive back.
Finally got the car home with occasional spurts of high temp, letting it cool and then driving again.
Checked the radiator, there's pressure and coolant. Also, noticed two oil patches under the engine.
So irritated, as I had bought a new radiator 3 months ago and replaced many coolant lines. Now I'm thinking thermostat. My problem is though, if you're replacing an entire engine and it takes two and a half weeks for a supposedly one or two day job as I was told, surely you would just quickly check the thermostat if the entire engine is out!

Couldn't take it back as they were closing when I picked up and now I'm afraid to drive it to the shop but don't feel like paying $250 for a tow truck after spending over $3000 today!

So irritated and fed up. Was looking forward to this day so much.

As Dann pointed out in another thread is the under tray on? Another suggestion posted recently was to bleed all the air out of the cooling system.

However you should contact the people who did the work and discuss.

ring them and give the shop the option of you driving it back gently or them sending a truck.

Swapped engine $+ that much coin should equal complete warranty on the work inc testing for overheating / no oil leaks etc.

$3k to replace a B6 SNC with B6 LNC! :shock:

At the very least it sounds like they rushed the job toward the end & quality control slipped.

Yeah tried to go down the 1.8 route but the only people who actually got back to me said "it's too complicated". I needed the car fixed ASAP as it's my daily and didn't have time to be waiting on everyone else. Only just now are some people getting back to me about the 1.8 swap apart from one guy a few days ago.

The issue is sorted. I babied the car down to the shop. By the time I got there, the temp gauge was reaching the high end. Long story short, replaced the thermostat and running a new cluster and the cars running and reading great (possible electrical gremlin). They tidied up the oil leaks, one of gaskets was slightly pinched and then after 3 hours of trouble shooting and stess, taking it for drives and bleeding the coolant system it's all good.
