Sal,
I was saddened to hear about your SE and I hope that you have thought about insuring the next one and consider yourself very fortunate on this occassion. I was involved in a 'hit and run' motorcycle crash a few years ago, injuries aside the loss of the bike ran out to $15,000 and without insurance I would have been devistated. I cannot understand the thinking behind not having insurance.

Mr Morlock wrote:If the car is insured you contact your insurer and they do the rest including the communication with the other party involved. Its true that many insurers take the Glass guide evaluations ( e.g. Shannons) and the value of the car should be shown on your Policy. The insurance co decides on whether its worth repair. Insurance co's have all the legal means at their hands.

The owner mentioned on the previous page that they were not yet insured.
They had only owned the car for two weeks, so I can only assume it was on the "to do" list.

The girl who caused the accident however, was insured.

My car was hit within 4 hours of arriving in Brisbane when I first bought it. It was unattended and parked in a parking lot, a 4WD reversed into my parked car. The driver left a note thankfully and because he was 100% at fault it was all dealt with through his insurance (AAMI). You should be in the same situation so not having the vehicle insured shouldn't be an issue.

Thats right HKS - how fortunate that the other party had insurance. Arranging insurance- a phone call and a cover note.

Continuing the thread drift, I wonder if this is still correct?

Last time (a while ago) I tried to get a cover note, I was told they wouldn't do it, but would sell me the insurance over the phone and I could pay for it with my credit card. Can't remember which insurance company that was, but it was no big deal for me and I paid up. I assumed at the time that technology had overtaken the cover note.

At the risk of lecturing, not being covered, at least for TPPD, is just stupid - it only needs something to happen as you drive it away, and your whole world goes pear shaped. My uninsured son got hit by a newish jap ute, and long story short, ended up bankrupt as a result. If you can't afford the insurance, you can't afford the car./lecture

I assume the OP paid cash for the car, as finance would normally require insurance.

Good luck OP with the insurance company. I hope it goes well but it might be worth checking around for a decent lawyer in case they play hardball, just so you are prepared if the need arises.

Shannons gave me a cover note for the SE.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I bought an SP25 2 months ago and I had got a few quotes in advance for comprehensive insurance, I decided AAMI had the best policy for me, the day I picked the car up I rang AAMI and gave them the vehicle details and got a cover note for the car that would last up to 2 weeks. Took 10 minutes over the phone and then I drove my new pride and joy home.

Thanks guys, that is something to file away for next time, if there is a next lime :D

Edit - a cover note is a short term insurance policy done over the phone, usually at no cost (?), provided in the hope/belief that you will take out a full policy with the provider.

Sorry to see this story Sal, I know the feeling, and it sucks.

Please - next time get insurance before you go and collect the car - I did this with the last two, but I was driving back from VIC the first time, and NSW the second so really wanted to have peace of mind for the trips.

Hope you have a good outcome from this and can get back in an MX-5 soon.

Thanks. I've never come accross one before.

I've always just told the insurance companies the date I'm collecting the car, and they've always started the insurance from that date.

That is the safest way of doing it - and we are all going to take out the policy anyway ... aren't we 8) .

I don't know anyone who has made a claim under a cover note, it's bad enough when you have paid the premium so I don't know how they would handle it when you haven't paid the premium

Basically they won't pay up until the years premium has been paid. You'll also find that to be the case on monthly payments as well. Basically they can't lose by providing a cover note.
