I don't get the point about the Jaycar kit- that merely switches lights on when light drops below a certain threshold - its got nothing to do with how a drl works.
DRLs have been around for many years- but previously they were incandescent powered. The led drl is easier to see and also has become very much a styling aspect for many vehicles and the makers are keen to show them off.

Not quite, the Jaycar kit turns the lights on with ignition.
Similar to Volvos in the early 1990s.
It seems to have a voltage switch though to turn them off if the battery gets low (not sure how this helps since the alternator is runnign when the engine is?)

I am not going to get this- it seems simple that if one wants a drl then buy a proper tested and legal kit ( subject to dimensional compliance on the vehicle or run headlights.

The Jaycar solution is just too complex and you may have to build it yourself, it would rely on more than one rely (electro-mechanical) and would be a diagnostic nightmare if it ever developed a fault. Get some LED inserts for your fog lights and wire around the parkers on/ fogs on issue with a the circuit/ loom mentioned in my earlier post or just run them as per and plead ignorance if the matter ever comes up.
Heck, your happy to obscure your number plates to 'fool' speed cameras.
