Yem11n's SE is one of the nicest NB's I've seen. Just right and not over the top...except for when he had it stripped out. It just needs pop up lights and it would be perfect!

And yet for me, when I drove it, half stripped, 3" turbo back, buckets, nice alignment and gorgeous silky smooth tune, it was the best street MX5 I had ever dríven (still is).

Hi all,

Some new year updates.

Since the engine have received all the add-on mods and got a nice tune done I am focusing more on aesthetic changes to the car.

I had the opportunity to spend a bit of time on ‘Tiny’ over the holiday period. I was able to do a few hours here and there while still taking care of my little gal and spending time with family and all.

First up was to replace the triangle window glass with G-Vent Wing window. This mod was done about a month a go but I though I should have this added to my garage thread...

I had them installed before a track day at SMP and got a lot of interest from other MX5 owners. It took about 3 hours total for me to install and easy DIY modification. They do function really well too, when the car is moving. Now I don’t look like a fool sticking my hand out to scoop air into the cabin.

Next up was to finish up my interior.

The carbon fibre door panels replaced the OEM door panels. I bought the parts from another forum member. I believe the parts are the same ones you can buy from Goodwin site. After measuring the weight, these panels will only save under 2kgs combines. haha

The door panels came with no mounting brackets on the back what so ever so all of that need to be made by me. I made up aluminium brackets to hold the door panel clips and cut the holes for the speaker and door handle. A lot of trimming was also required all around the panel to get it to sit flush so the door handle will sit/screw in properly. Numerous test fitting required to get the clips to align properly. Once everything was aligned the aluminium pieces are glued onto the panel. Driver side was done after and the time taken to do the driver door was shorter. It took me a good two days to get them mounted properly.

I would advise to consider carefully before getting from the same maker as the install process involves too much work. Now that they are installed I also discovered another place that is in process of making carbon fibre door shells (currently for NA) and the finish product is promised to be like an OEM replacement.

Some photos of the panel after preparation work and a wash.

Next was the finishing touch for the interior. When the carpet was removed from the car, I left behind the sound deadening stuff on the floor and around transmission tunnel. They are ok when cold but when hot they can smear and dirty the underside of the floor mats. So they needed to be cleaned up and removed.

There are also areas with different colour grey and black based on how the car was spray painted at the factory. So I painted the interior floor area with KBS rust seal. I got the satin finish but the finish product was shinier than what I had in mind. I do need to grab some black electric tapes to cover up the wires on the driver side and install the speakers back. Also to find a nice speaker grills to cover the hole. However I am enjoying the exhaust note and music is not on the priority at this moment.

Some photos of the clean-up process and finish.

Very nice, any chance you could take a close-up picture of the centre console guage/radio install you've done.
Did you do this yourself? Did the surround panel around the radio come with the radio?
The gauge panel itself, is that one from MX5parts.co.uk?

I am toying with the idea of doing something similar (different gauges though) and would like to see better how the finished result looks.

Cheers,
Nev

Hi Nev,

I will try to get you a close up picture.
All of this is installed by me. The surround panel around the radio came with the Radio HU. Most of the new HU should come with a new sorround.
I think you are right about the 3 gauge panel, I do not remember where from but it could be from MX5parts by looking at their web site.
I am not sure if you have seen the angled version of 3 gauge panel. If I had the opportunity again I would try to get the angled version. The gauges are pointed more towards the driver.

I will later move the A/F gauge into the glove box. And reinstall my clock gauge so I have all three matching gauges. Plus A/F gauge is rarely used.

cheers

Looks sooo good, need to do this to my car too!

A pair of these would match your doors

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
