Yikes really? Thinking of my daughter in a year or two, didn't expect that much. The 30k included purchase of 2 karts and trailer?

Yep close to $30k a year with 1 new kart a year just to stay up with the top 10.

Take a trip to Lithgow track and you will see $150000 transporters + gear :shock:

Its the same as any competitive sport $$$$ wins places :wink:

My Go kart has been moth balled since kids came on the scene.

Now they are old enough for me to regain time for some track work I looked at the costs of either rebuilding my kart as a toy or getting a competitive kart.
I decided it was cheaper and more opportunity to use a MX5 as a weekender and occasional tack toy. So, bought a NB MX5.

Once upon a time Karting was managed by CAMS in NSW and it was a really simple format that kept costs low. It did not appeal as much to the aspiring future F1 driver but it was good fun. Then CAMS gave control to AKA and things became a little more complicated.
My fondest memories were of driving a Kart in the wet on slicks as there was only one tire allowed in the J & Clubman classes. It really was a lot of fun to drive and really made it all about the driving skill. This is where I first saw Ryan Briscoe and James Courtney drive as Juniors and they had skill then.

If your after a rather inexpensive way to get into karting I race with a few of my mates in the sportsman endurance series (run by aka) we race from 7hrs up to complete 24hr races. It can be rather strenuous but with 2 or 3 mates onboard it makes the cost of racing a lot cheaper and also saves a lot on working on the kart by yourself and packing up etc. they also do sprint races for them aswell so it's always interesting.
My suggestion is though , go out to your local kart track and suss it out see when your able to practice and get in as much practice as you can then maybe enter your first race.

i dont mind not racing fir the first year aslong as i learn about the kart and motor and stuff.

So what about the PTA or PTA motors i think they are called.

Have you considered a Subaru-4-stroke kart ?? great starting point to learn and very cheap ($1800 to $2500 2 on ebay ) to run just tyres and fuel the Subaru motors just cant be killed and heaps of fun around tracks like the Butterfly Farm

see, thats awesome but i just need the motor and i need to be able to use it at other tracks for racing without having to fork out for another engine.

Theres a couple of racing series and especially enduros with the subi engine. Especially down at Picton.

The sad thing about this sport 100s of young blokes every year buy the best of everything then have 3 trips to the track then give up because they are too impatient to learn that or think they done it all in a month .

I have been told by a work colleague racing karts the front runners spend $100k a year. (Usually provided by an indulgent father, hopeful of a future f1 driver in the family).

Ehh, not really.

I won the 2012 TAG Super Series in a 2011 model $4,500 Tony Kart / x30 package. I did have a spare motor ($2k second hand) and an enclosed trailer ($2500), plus around $500 in spares and specialist karting tools.

Meetings were around $200 each with fuel, oil, entry fees, etc and I ran a new set of tyres every big meeting (an extra $220 per set). I also had to rebuild my engine at one point in the year ($400). From that, I got around 25 hrs of racing competitively.

It is dirt cheap racing.

I picked up my kart in pieces. Soon as i got home i started building it up.

i forgot to grab the pedals lol, i so i need to head back to the factory and pick that gear up.

Do you know what class this kart was used in? Looking at the axle and white number plate I would think it has been set up for a skinny kid racing junior clubman, It's not really a big issue to run around practicing in but it looks like there are no locations for extra bars, which probably means that kart will flex and grip up way too much if you start getting serious.
