Nah, no need to worry about the R spec rubber until you can't go any faster in what you have, then do small things that add up to a lot.
The car is old so check and replace the suspension bushes, decent brake pads and maybe braided lines to replace the standard rubber lines. Maybe look at suspension, either good quality replacement dampers and springs or make the move to coilovers.
Replacing suspension bushes will probably give you 1-2 seconds alone as the car won't be flopping all over the place.
Question of building up my engine.

1. R spec rubber.
2. Get a couple of seasons of racing under my belt, build skills
3. Turbo. There is a lot of support in Perth and nationally for turbo charging MX-5s, you get a lot of power and good reliability (with a sensible setup).
Basically, until you are getting close to the limits of what your current car can do, then upgrade power and everything else to support it.
There, fixed.
The thing with that is it would result in going up a class, to C, which I don't really want to do. With street tyres, my car runs B, and I still get my arse handed to me.

Street tyres on the track is fun for about 2 laps, then it's just tedious.

True. My brake pads (which I bought in a hurry and fitted right before I drove to the track) didn't like it very much either.
As much as I'd like to blame the tyres/brakes/whatever else mechanical for my poor lap times, it would just be an excuse. The problem is the driver, and I'm working on improving that
