I agree with 22Silver that we must protect ourselves from the elements and would also recommend you all to always wear a hat whilst driving with the top down to minimise the effects of wind erosion on your hair. Too many of us suffer from this condition where the wind has eroded our luscious locks away to nothing!

That's one thing that does scare me with the roof down

I think, for reasons of science, that the rock is always going to hit the windscreen if you're moving. It's the same reason when you're driving at 60+kmph the rain doesn't land on your head anymore, it all gets collected by the windscreen.

Apart from the half-dozen days of Winter we have each year it is too damn hot to be without a roof.
A couple of the local touring group do the sunscreen thing but they always look like cooked lobsters after the drive.
If I have to cover myself with grease to have a drive I'd rather read a book.

Speed of the car, direction of travel, speed of rock, direction of travel, etc, etc.

The rock won't always hit the screen, there is a chance it will hit you in the head, but the likelihood of it is much lower than it hitting the windscreen or the bootlid.

Of course, that's assuming the rock doesn't just break through the windscreen, in which case you have the worst of both worlds.

I think if I dropped 100~ water balloons off an overpass at MX5s driving under the overpass at 80kmph~ none of them would land inside the cabin.

I say this because when I'm driving through a light-shower at 80kmph I never feel a drop of water land on my arms/shoulders. And there are very many raindrops. If it was possible, I would still feel the odd drop.

Maybe my car is magic. 8)

by my calculations, Assuming the rock is dropping straight and removing wind resistance due to shape etc etc. If you were driving at 60 KM/h you would need the rock to be dropped from a height greater than 103 metres for it to get near your head assuming your are a tall person and your head is not far from the height of the screen.

My problem is the opposite, I get on a freeway and I gain an inch of hair through a process known as "air injection augmentation" :)

We never have "Winter" here in Brisbane, So that's a Mute point.
I've lived here for 5 years now and haven't seen one flake of snow.
(Snow is absolutely required for it to be "winter"!).
You start the engine in your MX-5, Your you hit the "Windows down" buttons on the console,
You unlatch the top above your head and hit the Top down button, Wait 14 seconds, Then place it into reverse and back out of the driveway.
That's how it's done, Period.!
Drive with the roof on! Really! Why not buy a Mazda 3!

We get it, you're more hardcore than everybody here, your penis is larger, and America is the best nation in the universe.

Happy?

Your reply is strange to say the least.
If I thought America was so great, Why did I leave it?
As per my Penis, I'm well over 50, I have nothing to prove,
And am way beyond caring.
But still, We really don't have a "Winter" here.
If that makes me more, "Hard core" than you, So be it.

Not quite magic, you're not feeling the rain because you effectively have a wind curtain while moving from the air redirected over and around the windscreen. A water balloon or rock would pass straight though it.

Some factories have fan forced air curtains on the doors, they keep the weather out but you can drive a forklift through them
With two laps to go then the action will begin, unless this is the action, which it is.

You have to wait how long :?:  I reverse out of the garage while Mrs JBT lowers the roof...must admit she should be able to drop it in less than the 3 seconds it takes her.
