what does youtube do to the quaility vision

hey guys ,, lets get this bit out first,, i am crap at this go -pro stuff .just not into it as much as everyone else .. but last night i got some good stuff ,so i thought i would put it on youtube for everyone here .... so why o why does it look like i am racing in 1977 !..watching it on the computer it looks great , on you tube it looks like it needs tony greig and richie commentary

Looks like the highest youtube playback is in 360p ( What is the highest resolution on your gopro ? )

Try changing your settings on your camera to 720p or better.

I think we should all ask Bensale to do some instructional videos on how to set up cameras.

thanks mate ,, yep , i have the go-pro on the top setting .even have it on the pro tune bit ,,but you tube wanted hours and hours because its so big to upload .... i just want the clip to be abit better and have the bollards not bend when i go in and out of the chicanes i am happy with the sound ,not to much wind noise.. so thats a good thing

it is all in how you edit it.
Youtube is only trying to upload what you give it.
If the file is 2gig then you are going to have a long wait for youtube to process it.

What are you using to edit the clip?
That software will have settings for how it renders the file, before uploading.

Hey mate, these are some of the questions in life I've been asking myself as of late. After extensive research, i found a forum thread that was started by one of the main editors for the genuine GoPro ads. These two videos were linked with it, and it's sort of helped, but quality is still cut down a little after upload. I think you need to be in some sort of special partnership with YouTube to get some sort of original looking quality (although have also tried looking up how to load original quality, wasn't great). I partnered up with YouTube yesterday (free of charge, additional basic features) and am currently doing tests with Protune and uploads. Keep in mind that Protune is raw footage and is about how you edit it AFTER.





A lot of work, but sort of worth it in the end.

I've found that if you don't have as much time to mess around, then Protune off, download free GoPro Cineform app, play with saturation, contrast, and sharpen quite a bit for YouTube.

Rod i've just started playing with software for iphone called Harry's lap timer, i've just ordered a better GPS receiver for my iphone to make it more accurate.

This software data logs and helps for sexy race track video overlays.

Happy to step you through the process once i've figured it all out myself.

Youtube puts some pretty aggressive compression on uploaded vids. Plus frame rate will be limited to 30fps (ie you upload a 720p60 video and it won't play at 60fps)

As noted above, youtube will compress your file. But it is still dependent on the quality you upload. So the first point is to see how you are generating the file which is then uploaded to youtube. I assume you didn't upload the file right out of the camera. That is where you will define the quality of the file.

As also noted above though a good quality vid, eg 2 gb..... Well, start uploading to youtbe when you go to bed and it might be done in the morning.....

Youtube's best optimised resolution for files is 1280x720 at 3500kbits per second, and using a h264 encode (mp4 container) (sorry nerd speak) for a convenient/quicker to upload file size.

it encodes 1920x1080 at about 4500kbits per second (more then double the pixels but no way near double the data rate)
Thats why full screen videos at 1080p dont look overall much different from the 720p versions. (there is a difference but unless your camera work is tripod stable and not panning about, you'd be struggling to find it..)

Doesnt matter how massive your datarate is for the quality of your video, youtube will strip off during its conversion to what it needs for hosting.
Irregardless, if you export at 3500 or 4500kbps, it will do it's own conversion. so instead of making it loose more quality out of your files, I generally aim to export my final video projects at 1080p with a 5000kbit data rate to optimise the size of the file to be about 100-250mb for a few minutes of footage, and spend the few hours over night letting it upload (or i'd take it to work were theres much faster uploading).

Then waiting for youtubes servers to finish its analysis (usually the moment you've uploaded its ready to watch in 240p/360p (ie, rubbish quality) and after a few minutes/hours it allows viewing at 720p and then 1080p.

Uploading raw footage off the camera, tho convenient, is going to take fages to complete as the size is massive (and youtube will still strip off 85% of it's size to suit its servers.)
Also exporting the highest quality setting from your editor is just as futile.

Also, the colour grading of footage can make it look much more crisp. There are techniques to make certain footage look sharper (understanding how datarates work in compression) but that is much trickier for the average Jo/Joe to do.

It can take awhile for youtube to create the HD versions.

To make sure you can see all the HD options put &hd=1 at the end of your YouTube url.
