Have you considered just re calibrating the wideband you have?

I did a free air calibration less than 100km ago when I installed the zorst. What I have done is re-calibrated the wideband in turner studio to match what I was seeing at the dyno. The gauge is reading completely different - I need to change the wideband controller setting to sort that. So hopefully, I should be able to use some auto tune again.

The big question is which one to believe - given my car drives so much better tuned to the dyno one, I am going with that. Also, I am sure it is a much more expensive bit of kit, not that always equals quality.

This is great news!
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

So the tuning roller coaster ride continues today.

I get in the car to drive to the club autotest and it is running not so good, but it never really does when cold. Still not feeling very solid once warm either. I take it pretty easy on the first 2 runs and it is hesitating and miss firing every now and again - this is not good. I must have done around 40 WOT dyno pulls on saturday and no issues at all. Lining up for the 3rd and the engine will not even free rev cleanly. Here is the fix to the problem....

Image

That's right it is the water temp sensor. The clip is broken and it was hanging off. This was causing the ECU to think that it was -18 deg C and hence it was dumping loads of fuel in for warm up enrichments, so the miss fire was from an excessively rich mixture. I noticed this when I hook up my phone to the ecu to get the output data. I jump out quickly, push the clip back on and the next run is trouble free and the car is pulling nice and strong. I still did not give it full throttle and I did short shift a bit. I built up to giving it the full beans on the last run, here is the result - it is a new experience - getting wheel spin in 3rd gear in an MX5. (quality is a bit naff)

Here is the dyno graph from saturday - notice the bumpy torque curve. I did not have time to sort out close loop boost control, so the boost is a bit inconsistent. I had less time than arranged, so I had to priorities. There is a boost spike right about 3800rpm.

Image

Basically made 190rwhp / 167ftlb torque at 8-9psi of boost. When I have time and I have sorted the close loop boost control, I will probably get back to the dyno and tune it to 220rwhp - that will be enough and safe.

With an increase in power comes an increase in stopping power - well to be safe anyway. There will be people who will want to say that 4-pots are over kill, but I have gone in this direction for a couple of reasons. One of the things I require from a motorsport car is that (tyres permitting) you can do lap after lap on a track without worrying too much about cooking the brakes or killing the engine. I have dríven too many cars on the track where it is one hot lap followed by 2 cooling laps - you just can't get into the groove. Secondly, when you look at the price of getting the Nb bigger brakes, it is not that much more to go this way.

You will have noticed that they are not the standard kit dynolite forged calipers, they are dynapro ones with dust seals (as mentioned before)

They are a bit bigger then the NA6 ones

I think I have gained about 5mm track as well because of the thickness for the hats. On the un sprung weight front, I think they are about the same, wilwoods my be a little lighter - that was measured with the deadly accurate, pick stuff up and compare it method.

Next is the back brakes - an upgrade to 11" rotors.

Yeah using the wilwood pads at the moment and yes from the US. I am sure there are better pads out there. One of the down sides of the dynapro is that you cannot get as many pads for them. My favorite pad is Ferodo DS3000 - had them in my APs on my Rally car in the UK - amazing pad, but you cannot get them for the dynopro, but there are plenty of other good pads available.
