Loudest timing belt available for NB8A.

Postby Rasputin » Mon Nov 04, 2013 7:49 pm

Just saw a series 1 rx7 do the biggest burnout I've seen.

He was fish tailing gutter to gutter in a spectacular display of smoke, octane and glorious limiter bashing.

(Happened in a carpark).

One thing I did note, was a fantastic whining sound coming from under his bonnet.

While some people hate this sound, I loved it! It added something unique to the sound of his car that split it apart from the other rotaries I've seen.

I'm aware this sound is created by tightening the belt past manufacturers specifications.

Is this achievable with the NB?

Struggling to find gates belt drive kits for the NB. Is there an overly aggressive timing belt available for the NB?

Dan.

No, it's not.

A lot of the rotaries with the whine are using gilmer drive pulleys (straight cut gears that engage a matching belt)

Also, on a rotary i can guarantee you it's not coming from the timing belt either.

That has a tight timing belt.

The rotary had a gilmer belt drive water pump or something. Gilmer drives are basically the same as a timing belt.

Mania have timing belts, but as the others said, "these are not the belts your looking for "

No, a tight timing belt really does sound like this.

Watch the vid. That mr2 is turbo the whine is it's timing belt.

As Dann said, I do believe an overtight timing belt will produce a whine (one of many possibilities)

The rx7 was naturally aspirated, and bridgeported. There is nothing else I can think of other than a gilmer belt drive kit, with the belt tensioner tightened to buggery.

Some of the GTR community have experienced whining sounds from their overtight gates timing belts too.

Gilmer drive belts sound like that with our being over tightened.

Best part is you will get a bonus 'bang' and fireworks after the whining noise too.

Probably not unless you've added a SBC, 202 or a 12a.

Gemini used to have kit, so you might get lucky, they are typically more of an old school / super charged v8 thing.

It would really just be a case of find the right diameter pulleys, the belt would be the easy part.

The hard part would be keeping the twin belts setup as the gilmer drive belt traditionally ran a much thicker belt. Obviously this is ok if you only run 1 belt (water pump, alternator, supercharger). Trying to add a second belt would mean it would be operating outside the designed plane. Assuming you could compensate this with super long pulleys (assuming sufficient space) , it would probably add significant bending moment onto the shaft and bearings of your power steer and ac pumps.

Maybe you could in turn change / space the mounts for these accessories to bring them further forward allowing a shorter pulley except at the crank. You would need to consider space to the rad at this point.

All depends on how keen you are ( read how much money and or time you wish to spend) and what width belt is available. The wider the belt the louder the whistle as a general rule.

Note: I didn't watch the mr2 video as taptalk gets picky about displaying external content, particularly video.

I know of people that have added a straight knurled to the existing pulley and another pulley else ware and ran a belt over these 2 pulleys. They don't do anything except make the noise you are after, they also don't interfere with the running of the car, I don't thing over tightening of the belts would do much for the life of your bearings

Thanks Dale! That's an interesting concept.

I'm so hellbent on making my car unique. Even if it's small silly things like this.

Thank you to everybody for the replies.

Says you.

Each and every one of my cars have had something that make people stop and stare and ask questions.

Taking photos at lights, getting thumbs up, people approaching me and giving me appreciation.

Hell, one lady at a servo looked at my car, then me and said "your car is so sexy; I don't know what to do with myself." That's a quote.

It all makes it worthwhile and turns your average day into a good one when something like that happens.
